Hi both.
Thank you very much :D,
The place and date is a big start, there may be a grave MI info in the archives but having the exact date will be the biggest help.

Hi Dobby......William Hall, hatter was my ggg grandfather...have been researching the Hall family line through my gg grandfather, Matthew, son of William. This research has led us up several wrong paths, one of which was a marriage of William Hall to Mary Taylor on 10 July 1824 and only recently found that this was not my William. His marriage to Mary in 1812 was his second marriage...his first was to Isabella Asbridge about 1899, producing several children , one of whom was my Matthew.
I have the will of William Hall, hatter, who died 15 March 1828 (death in Leeds Intelligencer March 20 1828), but, as yet no burial record.
I would be delighted to find that you are descended from the same William as I have yet to find other descendants.

Hi Margaret,
With so limited info, the 1830 death of William was worked out by Mary's (Mrs Hall) age 63 year b 1787/8 on the 1851c with son Thomas Henry Hall. Thinking William's aged a little old 1784
This William Hall a Hatter on the 1817 Leeds trade directory as Hatter come Woolstapler living Briggate Leeds fitted also William Hall was not on the 1798 directory Leeds at Briggate being to young.
Maybe you can take over this line now. add or subtract from recent found info.

I'm going to York to find the Bond Allegation of the Mary Taylor & Willam Hall marriage 1812 by Licence as this will give the ages of William and Mary in 1812 also will get a copy of this Will/Probate you mention 1828

Any ideas on baptisms for the children of William Hall and Isabella (married in 1799)? We have tried many church records with no success..all born between 1801 and 1810 when Isabella died...William, Clarissa, Matthew, James Asbridge, Mary, Sarah, Robert.
-
Hi Margaret,
Well I have done very little on this family of Hall's, I was answering the request of another member! about which marriage of many!! William Hall's was his the Wool stapler. I had to start a new thread as the look up board does not allow one to post images, so I had to post this marriage image of William Hall & Mary Taylor 1812 on this new thread. Since posting the other member seems to have lost interest ??? as I have tried to contact him by PM (thats a private message) and had no reply. (It happens often on this website as they request something and never return to find the outcome.)
I did have suspicions there may be another earlier marriage as William Hall of Briggate Leeds as he was mentioned being there in 1800 in some record in Google books. (Though his dad could have been named William as well living at Briggate Leeds).
Thomes Henry Hall -William's youngest son of his 2nd marriage to Mary Taylor was baptised in Birstall 1844 parish abode Leeds in born 1824 of William & Mary Hall, Woolstapler and that was the only sibling of William anyone knew about until you came on the website.
-
More information! Thomas Henry Hall had a brother, Phillip Taylor Hall, born about 1819, died July 1837, in his 18 th year. There was a large gap between the marriage and first child of William and Mary...all 10 children were mentioned in William's will in 1828.

John Asbridge, hat manufacturer, and son of William Asbridge, also a hat manufacturer,
lived in Cockermouth between about 1775 and 1843. He was twice married, first to Mary Brown in 1804
and then to Ann Wrangham in 1829, Mary having died whilst giving birth to twins (John and Mary) in 1805.
From the second marriage came Ann in 1831. John's sister, Isabella, married William Hall of Leeds,
also a hat manufacturer, in 1799 and John was co-bounder for the bond for this marriage. William Hall, 27 to Isabella Asbridge, 21 in Cockermouth in 1799

-
Hi Dave...a beautful day here.
We believe that the reason for Thomas's late baptism may have been that he was to inherit from the estate of his half brother and maybe needed proof of age. James Asbridge Hall batchelor, a son of William and Isabella, died in 1844, and Thomas was mentioned in his probate.
Thomas was born in Leeds where William and Mary lived until William's death in 1828 (his will states Leeds as his dwelling place).
It is interesting to note that another occupant in the house rented by Mary as a widow, was George Milner, whose daughter Thomas eventually married. Mary obviously moved here after the death of William as she was left an annuity in the will and money was left for the maintenance of Phillip and Thomas, as minors.

Hi
Quote you"'a beautiful day here' not had one of them since we had a week in May this year of hot weather, most of the year has been soggy and still is.
Joke going around UK is Westest drought on record' since Norfolk declared drought conditions in Feb this year.
Now having ages of William Hall, age 27 in 1799-age 40 in 1812- and age 58 in 1828 = born 1770 to 1772
Speaking of May! Its going to be 'maybe's' until something positive is found, therefore finding William's fathers name and his death year to see if there is a Will/Probate of his father also maybe a grave epitaph.
Have you found any suggestions as to his a father's name
Dobby
-
We have friends in Oxford who lament on your weather. water restrictions etc. Our summer was pretty poor so it's nice to get a sunny winter's day once in a while.
I have no idea on William's father's name, nor where he was born...I could guess William as most of the children in the families called their fist son William...maybe that's too much of an assumption, but worth a try. He seemed to be fairly entrenched in Leeds in the hat business from a fairly young age...however I have been wrong before!
An example...William Milner was Thomas's father in law...not George..an interesting coincidence though.
Good night..

Struggling through the Marriage Bond Allegation; quick question. Is this just the equivalent to a marriage license or is there more to it? Seems incredibly detailed
-
Hi
Most licences did not survive and there is a reason the bond allegations were kept by you will have to explore the internet. None of the documents gave parents names! unless one the couple was minor or both were.. The great thing about these allegations is they gave their ages and abodes.
I have found the Will of (William Hall b 1770 d 1828 father Thomas) father Thomas Hall b 1751- d 1838 Will in probate passed July 1840

The way they entered the baptisms at St Peter's Leeds was unusual!
Entered like
William Hall, St Geo Street, Mathew
They put the parents name first in pen drawn (Not printed) boxed entry.

I would advice either joining Ancestry.com subscribed at home or visit a town/city central main council library and (advice use this method first) use their free library edition of Ancestry.com on a public computer as all most all of the West Yorkshire anglican parish registers & some nonconformist registers are on their website and are indexed in their search engine. Plus all cenus & loads more doc's
LDS family history libraries takes time to order films and charge to hire films.

Hi Dave
These Halls are getting more complicated. School holidays are on here and I have been busy doing my nanna duties. Ken went to the Genealogical Society yesterday and came up with these results:

1794 Daniel Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate
1795 William Hall & co on the bridge (j Daniel was bankrupt in 1795)
Leeds Directory
1797 & 1798 Hall & co patent hat makwers bridge

1820 Baines Woolstapler, Hall William, Queens Court, Call Lane (printer:Wm Headley, 91 Briggate) was woolstapler in Lands Lane in 1820
General & Commercial Directory of Leeds, 1826; Hall, Wm, woolstapler, 5 Queens Court, Call Lane: h..1 Blundell Place Sunny Bank, St James street
This all poses more questions...was Thomas the father or a brother. Are all the Williams the same person or is William, the son also involved. William, the father died in Leeds in 1828

I had discounted Thomes Hall burial 14th March 1838 aged 86 (Born 1751)
buried St Mark Woodhouse Leeds after reading this Will, being William was alive
1824 and not mentioned in the Will
But two things have made me reconsider to make you aware of
Thomas Hall sr Had two sons mentioned in the Will below Thomas jr Hall & Henry Hall his sons
William Hall Woolstapler/Hatter named his last son Thomas Henry Hall in born 1824
Now there is a Thomas Hall at Briggate Leeds Hatter

Maybe William Hall was set up in business by his father Thomas before Thomas Hall wrote his Will 1824 therefore did not mention William in his Will.

Without the Father of (William sr d 1828 ) Will/probate also his death/burial year, there is bits of good info! but not enough to say anything certain Yet.
All you have is William's circa birth year 1770 from 3 life event ages and year of but not place of birth.?
Like looking for Adam Ant in an ants nest :( with all these Hall's
I'm only 75% on the burial in York being Your William
Best I can do for you :-\
Good hunting :)

Thanks Dave...more material to sift through...you are right..it was his will which named Leeds as his place of residence..I'll go back through my records to see what I can find....are you avoiding the Olympic chaos?

My thoughts are
The 1770 baptism Shipley in Bradford William ~Father Thomas Hall is most likely your William
Thomas death 1838 aged 86 of Bowling Bradford and quit usual to set sons up in business before their death thus not all sons are mentioned in Wills as was the case my Great Grandad
Thomas Hall dad could have been a man of modest means as a Hatter and William could have made the business bigger in Briggate taking over from his father.
We have Thomas Hall in 1826 a hat manufacturer in late of Sheffield meaning he came from another town/city and a Thomas Hall in Leeds Briggate with son William 1814/15 with outletsshops in York and Sheffield maybe?
Through business these Hall's did move around as Willam's marriage 1799 In Cumbria
York to Leeds would be travelled in 2 hours by stagecoach on the old York road
This is speculation on Thomas!~ had Thomas Hall born 1751 been a younger man as Hatter in Sheffield
or elsewhere he would have shown up on later census or trade directories after 1826. Thus this makes me think it was William's dad.
Taken back to Shipley/Bowling Bradford as a family grave of his wife maybe.

Hi Dave
These Halls are getting more complicated. School holidays are on here and I have been busy doing my nanna duties. Ken went to the Genealogical Society yesterday and came up with these results:
Fom Leeds Intelligencer
1793 James Daniel, patent hat maker from Stockportopened a warehouse near Red Bull Inn Leeds
1794 Daniel Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate
1795 William Hall & co on the bridge (j Daniel was bankrupt in 1795)
Leeds Directory
1797 & 1798 Hall & co patent hat makwers bridge
1800 Hall & co patent hat warehouse, Briggate
1807 Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate (Hall William volunteer Amen Corner)
1809 Hall, William, hatter & woolstapler, Briggate
1814 1815 Hat Manufacturers: Hall, William, 91 Briggate;Woolstapler, Hall, Thomas, 91 Briggate
1817 Hall, William, hatter & woolstapler & agent to the LondonUnion Fire Office, 91 Briggate; Hall, Mary, straw hat maker, 91 Briggate
1818 1820 Commercial Directory: Woolstapler,Hall, William, 91 Briggate; Hatters:Hall, William, 91 Briggate
William, the father died in Leeds in 1828
From Leeds Intelligencer
1793 James Daniel, patent hat maker from Stockportopened a warehouse near Red Bull Inn Leeds
1794 Daniel Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate
1795 William Hall & co on the bridge (j Daniel was bankrupt in 1795)
Do you think that is Daniel (James) & Hall (William) & co
or Daniel Hall & co (as one person named Daniel Hall & co)

Hi Brain
Must leave now! I've spent too much time on this! maybe many false leads but one may be the right one.
I'll leave you with this food for thought!
The Southwark William Hall Hatmaker lead location fits the 1794 first known info of William in Leeds 1795 first mention also this James Hall fits merchants and cloth goods, shop keepers etc-Willaim Hall did travel along way to Cumbria to marry Isabella from Leeds, so coming to Leeds from London is not that unrealistic.
Being a hat maker or milliner is a trade that takes time to learn by apprenticeship and that is a puzzle ??? but he turned to a Woolstapler merchant similar to this James Hall Southwark.#
Enough to keep you going years.

Take this as is! based on a theory that William had to be taught the Milliner/Hatmaker trade, either by his father, or an apprenticeship bought by either his father or a poor boy paid by a parish poorlaw overseers of the poor.

Hi Dave
We're still digging. It's possible that the William's could not be the same ones...William had a son William who was a woolstapler...was in London from the 1830's
The Thomas was not a son..William's son Thomas was not born until 1824...he had no Thomas by his first marriage so if they're related he could only be a brother or father.
We are currently trying to find where William came from...checking Stockport where his original partner James Daniel came from.
I have written to the archives at Sheepscar..last time we were there they mentioned that they have business records.
We'll keep digging and hopefully get a breakthrough....thanks again for all your help

Hi Margaret
I know about William's son Thomas Henry Hall b 1824 bapt 1844 Birstall abode Leeds
I was working on the directory 1815 Thomas Hall Hatter 91 Briggate Leeds
with William who died 1828 age 58.
The fact that this Thomas Hall Hatter 1815 directory disappeared by the 1817 directory and the 1816 death of Thomas Hall aged 56 in Leeds maybe the brother of William Hall death 1828 not his son Thomas Henry Hall b 1824
There could be another possible baptism of William Hall who died 1828 Leeds age 58 = b 1770
To the south of Cookermouth is a village called Pardshaw
