I am researching the Hoare family of Dublin but I have hit a brick wall. John Hoare was a jeweller/silversmith during the first part of the 20th century and i know his daughters were Mary, Bridie and Kitty. I think 'Bridie' and 'Kitty' were nicknames. I do not know the name of John's wife and was wondering if anyone had any information about this family. On Mary's death record in the UK it says she was born in 1915 but I do not know if this correct and I don't know for sure if she was born in Dublin. I am not sure how to proceed from here as I cannot find John or anyone on the 1911 Ireland census - well not as a jeweller/silversmith anyway. He might have become that after that date.

Your dates are a little bit too recent for useful details from census returns etc, and as you say maybe John wasn't a jeweler/silversmith by the time on the 1911 census.
Do you have marriage details for any of the children to confirm father's name and occupation ?
Cert should also include current residence, and may also give their age at the time which could help...
p.s. Kitty = Katherine or Catherine
Bridie = Bridget

This could be him with the spelling HORE
HORE 19.2 in Gloucester Street, Upper (North Dock, Dublin) 1911 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/North_Dock/Gloucester_Street__Upper/30394/)
HORE 8.2 in Stephen's Place (South Dock, Dublin) 1901 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/South_Dock/Stephen_s_Place/1351658/)
wife's name changes from Catherine to Bridget so he most likely married twice or it could be two different families
if a second marriage it was about 1908
-
^^ looks good - a silver finisher, and a daughter named Bridget...
First wife 'Cathrine', second marriage to Bridget c1908
There are two possible marriages in Dublin around the right time - a John Hore in Dublin South, and a John Hoare in Dublin North. The one in Dublin North (Jul-Sep 1908/Vol 2/pg 520) looks a little more likely, and there's a cross match to a Brigid Hanlon.
The one in Dublin South (Apr-Jun 1908/Vol 2/pg 666) has no less than four Bridgets as cross matches - although some could be second marriages...
Bridget Bolger, Donnelly, Kirby & O'Brien

Possible first marriage:
Marriage of JOHN JOSEPH HORE of 27 BENZILLE STREET and CATHERINE DONNELLY of 143 LOWER BAGGOT STREET on 27 September 1891 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/695c0e0447274)
Possible baptisms for children to John and Catherine:
Baptism of FRANCES HOARE of 143A LR BAGGOT ST 1892 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/875f450271177)
Baptism of CATHERINE HORE of ROTUNDA HOSPITAL 1894 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/9c4c650128365)
Baptism of JOHN HORE of 51 ST CUMBULA ST 1896 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/4755fa0275220)
Death for Catherine HORE 1906 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FRXK-LJ8)
Possible second marriage - I agree with Shane
You would need to get the original certificate to confirm the correct name
Birth of Ellen HORE 1901 (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FBVP-D2G)

They switch sides of the Liffey between the 1901 and 1911 census - so I suppose either of the 1908 marriages are possible...

HI all,
Yes, I have Mary's marriage certificate from 1937. It says her father was John Hoare and a silversmith. Her address was 61 Leix Road which is in Cabra in the north of the city. Because of this I have actually taken a chance and ordered the birth certificate of a Mary Hoare born in Dublin North in 1912 though there is one born in Dublin South in 1913 too.
The John Hore silver finisher looks compelling but the children don't look quite right.

Listed at 61 Leix Rd. on the 1939 Dublin City Voters Register (http://www.dublinheritage.ie/electoral/index.php) are :
John & Fanny Hoare, Denis & Kathleen Kearns
S.
-
Brilliant! I wonder if Kathleen was 'Kitty'?
'Fanny' - Frances?
-
one of the daughters shown on the 1911 census return mentioned earlier by myluck! was a Francis age 18, so would have been old enough to
be married and have a vote by 1939.
Shane
-
sorry - mixed the names up... that Frances could have been John's wife or single daughter...
S.
-
I am wondering if Fanny/Frances was the single daughter and the 'Bridie' my friend's mother remembers was actually the mother i.e. Bridget and not a sister. She can't remember the name of the mother (i.e. her grandmother) at all.
-
there's a possibility for a marriage for Catherine in 1923 as follows :
name: Catherine Hoare
registration district: Dublin North
event type: Marriage
quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1923
volume : 2 / Page: 359
there's a cross-match to a Denis Kearns...
Shane
-
That looks very compelling.
Have you looked at other voters' lists?
-
I have now had time to really sit down and look at this properly. Thanks all so much. I really think you are all on the right lines and it's the correct family.
The 1908 John Hoare marriage is wrong as I found a John Hoare (a widower) living with his parents in law who are Tiernans so the 1911 census and that makes the match for that marriage Mary Ann Tiernan.
So it's going to be one of those Bridgets matching the John Hore and a 1908 marriage.
I'll let you know what that birth certificate says (though I am prepared for it to be the wrong one!).
-
1939 is the only one available online at the moment. You can search Dublin City Electoral registers for other years in Dublin City Library, Pearse St.

I live in London so can't really but thanks. Maybe one day if I visit.
I think I will also order the 1908 marriage cert for John Hore tomorrow.
-
I'm a great grandson of John Hoare and would be happy to confirm family tree details if interested?
-
Hi Am,
A family remember and you are correct about John. He was married Bridget Hoare.
they had 7 kids in total.
His son Edward/ Eddie went into his field and became a clock maker at 14 and completed almost 10 years training. 2- Brothers have passed away over the last 2 years, but all of the sisters are surviving. John was a craftsman of his work I am wearing one of his rings which is close 100 years old. Very Few family members are left currently Bridie, Francis (Fanny), Christina/ Chris are all alive and well living in Dublin. Youngest in still living in Las Vegas Mary.
Edward was working until approx. 6 years ago never had to look for work his retirement and customers still to this day people call his number for work.
If you have any questions,
Let me know.
Dee (Grandchild and Great grandchild)
