Title: KELLY Mourne Road, Drimnagh
Post by: misskelly on Tuesday 03 July 12 15:04 BST (UK)
Hi, I’m trying to find out about my granddads family. I don’t really know much, I just have the following information
Also, as Kelly is one of the more popular names in Ireland it is extremely hard to find my ancestors, all their names are so common, its like looking for a needle in a haystack

The Kelly’s lived in Mourne Road, beside the big church on mourne road, I think it may have been a corner house facing the church.
My granda was William Kelly born 29th December 1923. He had a brother ‘Barney’ (Bernard) who was a chimney cleaner, a sister ‘Sadie’ (Sarah) and a sister
Josephine, he may have had more siblings but that’s the only ones I know about. I don’t know his fathers name, I do know his mother was Sarah Kelly she could have been
born around 1906. This is the only information I have about the family, would be very interesting to find out more.
I noticed another thread on here with the names in the same heading ‘William Kelly and Sarah Kelly’, this is a different family, as I said its so hard to find the correct family as Kelly is such a common name.

The place to start would probably be with a birth cert for your Grandfather, as that would give you his mother's maiden name to help you with further searches. Could there be one for him stored away somewhere ?

A marriage cert for him would also be useful if you have one, as it would give his address at the time of marriage, plus his father's name and occupation

What was his wife's name ?

If it's not too common a name it may be possible to find a possible match for their marriage on the BMD Index on FamilySearch.

On the 1939 register of electors there are only two families of Kelly on Mourne Road
James  & Mary at 100 and Edward & Eizabeth at 130

Did William and Teresa marry in Dublin?

Had a quick search, but not seeing any good matches for the marriage so far... will check a bit further later on. Did both Theresa and William come from the South Dublin area ?

Relatively recent dates involved with this, so be careful not to  mention details about people who may be living, as that's not permitted for security reasons.

Possibly married in 1948, both from South Dublin. I'd say more than likely they married in South Dublin city

There is a civil reference in Rathdown District, Dunlaoghaire/Wicklow border
William Kelly  (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYGS-TWY) and  Theresa Hughes  (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYG3-GPX)
with a matching record for a Theresa Hughes

Obtaining this certificate will prove if correct and more importantly give you William's father's name and occupation.
This will help find out more

You can order from the GRO (General Registry Office) in Roscommon
or as the marriage is after 1922 online from the HSE

Once you have William's father's details let us know and we'll try and help again

Hi,

I am from Scotland, however my Kelly heritage came from Dublin, Ireland.

I don't know any of relations being named William or ‘Barney’ (Bernard) and obviously his sisters can't be the same 2 women I am talking about as they didn't have bothers by the names of William or Bernard but..........

I had a Great Aunt Josephine Kelly and a Great Aunt Sarah (but we called her Sadie) - they were sisters. My Great Grandmother was also called Sarah Kelly.

My Great Grandmother, Sarah Kelly was born somewhere like... "Donnybrook counly or connly, Dublin". Not sure as reading it from a birth certificate.

The eldest family members which I have read about is:

John Thomas Kelly (some people knew him as Jack) married Sarah Kelly on August 28th 1916. John Thomas Kelly died in 1966 - 73 years old. Sarah Kelly died before that but I have no idea when.

and older than that was my Great Great Grandfather Joseph Kelly and Great Great Grandmother Joanna Kelly, however I have no dates at all to do with them.

That is the furthest I have gotten to so far but I don't think I can go back any further as they all lived in Dublin. However, I have photo's of my Grandmother's ....either... cousins or aunties and uncles. She got the photos but has no idea who they are expect that they are related.

I said Sarah Kelly was born in Donnybrook connly/counly, Dublin but that does not mean all my other Kelly relations were born there.

I doubt we are speaking of the same Sarah Kelly but your Kelly's could be cousins or aunties/uncles of my Gran or great gran or even great great gran.
