Born 1800, TBC, believe in Swansea. Married Esther Matilda Watts 8th October 1832 and died 27 July 1856 in Poplar. I know there were at least two sons and a daughter David Edwin or Edward and Esther. I was/am hoping to be able to go back further than 1800. I went to Cardiff records office, they were not able to find anything but advised I go to local Swansea churches to check their records. I am going to pursue a few family records I have been given plus Swansea St Mary register. Having said this all the info I have about David is as above but there is a slim possibility his father may also have been a David, his mum I have no idea. Am I at an end for this ancestor?I am off to the UK in about two weeks so any suggestions would be welcomed.
Thank you.
Colin.

In the 1851 census David Lewis gave his place of birth as Swansea, so your search in the Swansea St Mary registers is a good place to start. However, there does appear to be at least one other David Lewis born in Wales around 1800, and one also married an Esther, so it might be easy to get the wrong man.

Hello Colin
If I have the right family in the 1851 census, the children's names are somewhat different from those you have given:
1851 census: HO107/1556/621/3
10 Cottage St, Poplar
David LEWIS Head Mar 51 Mariner Glamorgan Swansea
Esther do Wife Mar 37 Middx Tower Hill
Edwin A do Son 10 Scholar Middx Poplar
Lydia do Daur 8 Scholar Middx Poplar
George L do Son 6 Scholar Middx Poplar
Are these likely to be the right people?

I see that there are additional, earlier, children in 1841, when they are at the same address (Cottage St):
1841 census: HO107/702 bk9 folio 8 p10
Cottage St, Poplar
David LEWIS 35 Mariner
Esther do 25
David do 7
Esther do 5
Edward do 1
all born in county (Middlesex) except for David senior.

Baptisms, All Saints, Poplar
1834 (14 Sep): David John LEWIS, born 29 May 1834
1836 (10 Jul): Esther Matilda LEWIS, born 20 June 1836
1838 (5 Aug): Ann LEWIS* (no birthdate noted)
1841 (14 Feb) Edwin Alexander LEWIS, born 31 July 1840
1855 (15 Oct): Lydia LEWIS, born 31 August 1842
1855 (21 Oct): George Llewellyn LEWIS, born 7 Sep 1844
In each case the parents are given as David (mariner) & Esther, of Poplar.
*There is a burial for an Ann LEWIS of Poplar at All Saints, Poplar: 3 May 1840, aged 1.

I can see what you mean about there being two David Lewis,s, easy to pick the wrong one. My ancestor is I believe living at number 13 on 1851 census Cottage Street i.e. David, Esther,, Edward Lydia and George as the age does seem to tally up, ie Davids, so feel I have been looking at the wrong David/Esther on the 1841 census ???
It does look like the 1851 census that I have is the right family and I have worked incorrectly on two families in the same street? So I seem to be back to my original query, but now which is the right David etc and can I trace his ancestors?
Feel I will have to hunt with what I have at present :) and see where I am going.

I'm confused. Where is the "second family" of David, Esther etc? I can only see one such family in the Poplar area (as above).

Hi
I believe that the 1841 and the 1851 census are the same family or have I missed something ???

OK so the general census is that this is the same family, one large family. Dav ids age differs a bit but I am lead to believe five years is not uncommon. Edwin/Edward is likely to be the same person then and David, brother and sister Esther have left home by the 1851 census. I have a copy of Davidc marriage solemnized in the presence of what looks like Edward and Maria Tissler/Turner? I still go back to my original query that with no real concrete of Davids father, only possible he also was David, am I at the end of tracing this line back. ???
Any suggestions
Thanks,
Colin.

Father not David but;
David LEWIS Christened 1801, Swansea St Mary, Glamorgan, Wales
Father WILLIAM
(Familysearch.Org)
This is also on FreeREG, date 16 January 1801
FreeREG has a David christening Children c 1790-1810 in Swansea but he has no David as his Son.
