I am trying to find a record of the death or other information on Samuel MITCHELL who lived in Collingwood / Northcote (Melbourne) area. He had a son born Collingwood in 1864, his wife died in Collingwood in 1881. He was a plasterer by occupation. He came to Geelong from England in 1855. Wife's name was Fanny (nee THOMPSON. They were both born in London in 1830/1832 and married in London in 1852.

If you have Fanny's death certificate, which would detail her place of burial, you could check with the cemetery to see if Samuel is buried at the same location.

Samuel placed an advertisement in the ARGUS in 1855 informing his brothers that he had arrived in Victoria. Their names were listed as John and John Edward Enderby
A man called JOHN EDWARD ENDERBY had a number of children in the Avoca area between 1857 and 1870.
I am not sure how he is a brother of SAMUEL with the different surname ???

I would suggest he is his step brother.
I noticed that the 1851 census had wife 'Rody', not Elizabeth.

Awesome, I’m most impressed!
I have the shipping record of Samuel MITCHELL and Fanny THOMPSON, who sailed from SouthHampton, England to Geelong in 1855 and listed his occupation as plasterer, and native country as Middlesex, England. That would match up with them having their first daughter in Geelong, and possibly learning his father’s trade. I have a birth certificate for Henry Walter MITCHELL, who was my great grandfather, and born in East Collingwood in 1864.
I also have the death certificate of Samuel MITCHELL’s wife, Fanny MITCHELL. This lists her death as 1881, in Collingwood, that she was born in England, had 4 children, Jane Elizabeth, John David, Samuel and Henry Walter. Also that her father was Edward THOMPSON, occupation Die Sinker, and her mother Elizabeth SPEARING. (not sure what a die sinker was)
Thankyou so much, I was starting to think that Samuel MITCHELL may have left after his wife died, as I didn’t seem able to find anything on him after that. Also I don’t seem able to find a death record for Henry Walter MITCHELL, Samuel’s youngest son.
Once again, many thanks J

Hi dustfarmer
I don’t seem able to find a death record for Henry Walter MITCHELL, Samuel’s youngest son.
The name Henry was abbreviated in the Index.
Hy Walter MITCHELL aged 71 died 1935 NCOTE
Parents were Samuel MITCHELL & Fanny THOMPSON
Reg #11073
Did Fanny's death certificate mention Samuel still alive or deceased?

Unfortunately Victorian death certificates in this era don't show the marital status.
I think that the 1903 death is her husband Samuel. If he is buried at MGC there is no MI.

Cando, the headstone erected by Samuel answers my query.

OK :)
Perhaps Samuel is buried at the same location but no MI. MGC are always helpful with burial information.

Rhonday May …. Hy Walter MITCHELL aged 71, died 1935 Northcote, Parents Samuel MITCHELL and Fanny THOMPSON is a match. On Fanny’s death certificate, Samuel MITCHELL, husband, was the informant.
cando ….. Have now got death certificate for Samuel MITCHELL , and from that and death certificate for Fanny, I know they were both buried at the Melbourne General Cemetery.
I also have photos in an album taken at Geelong, that I can look at again, and try and identify people in. I had assumed that when Samuel MITCHELL arrived in Geelong he probably came to Melbourne, but if Jane Elizabeth was born there, they were probably there for some time.
Sparrett …. Have got a copy of the notice in the argus re Samuel MITCHELL arriving at Geelong and trying to contact his brothers. Fantastic J
cando … I assume that the Melbourne General Cemetery memorial is a copy of an inscription. Nice. I wandered about the cemetery in about 1982, but had no idea where or what I was looking for. Thanks. On your next post, you say if he is buried at MGC there is no MI (?) is that marriage information?
I have an album of photos that I was assuming came from another part of the family, not mitchells, but with the info I have got from you people today, I think the photos may be a mix from both sides of the family. Anyway, the information has opened up some new leads and possibilities, many thanks.
If I was to load up some of these photos, is there people that could perhaps put a rough age on the photos from the clothing people are wearing in them?

MI = Memorial inscription. Transcribed from a resouce produced by the Genealogy Society of Victoria.
I suggest you contact MGC for Samuel's burial location. I have always received excellent service from the office staff. Give ALL the relevant details on the cert ie place of death, date of death, date of interment etc.
