Hi
Looking for information on the occupants of 2 Bristol Street, in 1881, Henry & Hannah Jones, children Sarah J, Edward and Rose but Rose's full name was Florence Rose, I think Edward may be my great grandfather. I have tried google maps to see if I could see the road they may of lived on but to no avail, Hannah may be my Great great grandmother, but I know Henry wasn't Edwards father but is the father of Rose, Sarah has the surname of her mothers maiden name of Williams. b. 1869 d. 1881 in Northampton.

Hi Zoe
If you go to www.familyhistorynorthampton.co.uk there is a Northampton Town late victorian street map. Bristol Street was on the far left-hand side between Chalk Lane and Bath Street. I think lots of that area was redeveloped in the 60's and 70's as flats and council houses.

There are also photographs of Bristol St, taken before it was redeveloped, on the website mentioned by Amanda. The streets are in alphabetical order.
-
Thankyou for your replies I will look at the site.
Also I would like to find out more about the occupants of 2 Bristol Street in 1881, but not sure how to research this?.
-
I have tried the link Amanda gave me but all I get is web page can't be found?

I am trying to find birth records for Edward & Sarah, & that of Hannah, I have the 1 for Rose, her father was Henry & mother's name of Hannah Ann Williams,
On Edward' s Marriage cert it has Edward down as his father but deceased at the time of the marriage. Edward married Mary Jane Jones in 1899 in Wales. occupation for his father was farm labourer.
I have ordered Sarah's death cert, but haven't found her birth entry yet, also can't find any info on Hannah on any census records other than the 1881, or any marriages for her.
My Aunt seems to think that Edward was brought in a workhouse but whether this true I'm not,
I also was hoping to find out where they moved to after being in Bristol street,.
Edward I know was living in Wales on 1901 & 1911 census. & died in Wales
-
There is a possible birth for Sarah, using info from the 1881 Census:
Jun Qtr 1869 Derby Vol 7b Page 388
Sarah Jane WILLIAMS
Out of interest, how have you linked your Edward to this family? Did he marry as a Williams or a Jones? Does he give Sheffield as his pob in later censuses?
Gaie
-
I was told that Edward was born in Sheffield in 1873, when looking on Ancestry, it linked him with the Wales census in 1901 & 1911 in the 1911 census he was living Pendryndeudraeth, and on those census gives his pob in Sheffield.
-
The best I can come up with for a birth record is this one in Wortley District; Wortley was amalgamated into Sheffield in 1974:
Dec Qtr 1873 Wortley
Vol 9c Page 266
Edward Augustus WILLIAMS
Can you give us all the info from the 1901 and 1911 censuses including the reference numbers? I don't know if I'm looking for Jones or Williams :-\

Hi Sandy,
Thankyou so much, would happen to know if Edward was with her, possibly with the surname Jones or Williams with Sarah J in the union workhouse..
Zoe
-
Hi Sandy,
Looking at a map of northampton Bristol Street, there was a union workhouse on the right of the map I was looking at, is that the workhouse Sarah would have been in.
Zoe
-
Hi Zoe.
I am afraid I can only say that Sarah J died in the Workhouse
which would have been St Edmunds, off the Wellingborough Rd.
There was no other that I know of.
The Salvation Army Mission House was near Bristol St and it really
was a poor area of the town.
It might be an idea to see whether the Northampton Record Office
hold admissions books for the workhouse for the period that you
know Sarah was there. Edited They do. :)
You will find the link under my Useful Northants Links below this posting
Reply 2.
Click on "Collections we hold" then "Poor Law Records" and it shows that
they have Admission/Discharge Records for Northampton from 1837 upto
1933 so your family should be entered although under which surname
would need confirming.
Sorry I can not help more.
Sandy

Thankyou Sandy, Your help is much appreciated, as is everyone's that is helping me.

Gaia,
I know it has Jones on the census' & Marriage cert, but could he have been under the surname of Williams like Sarah, But I know Rose is under the surname of Jones & her father was Henry.
Zoe
-
Hi Sandy,
Where did you look for Sarah' burial records, just that as I have never looked for burial records before.
Zoe
-
I was looking at the Marriage cert of Edward, Hannah's son on it has the witnesses as William Jones which I know was the name of his wife's father, the other witness was an Ann Jones could this possibly Edward's mother but just using her middle name.?
Zoe.
-
Hi
I now have the death record for Sarah J, as Sandy said she died in the union workhouse in Northampton, No names, Now hoping to find her birth record. & obviosly that of Edward.
How would you search for a burial record for someone who had died in the workhouse and where they are actually buried, do you think they all could have been in there,
I know Edward was in there from 1891, but could he have been in from 1881- 1890. wonder what happened to his sister Rose,
Also wonder where his father came from. ???
-
Just re checked Rose's birth cert, on it she was born in 2 Bristol St. Northampton, Parents Henry Jones & Hannah Ann Jones "Formally," WILLIAMS"
-
Hi Zoe.
Sorry not to have answered before I was dealing with a funeral
of a close friend.
The burial record and cemetery details I already listed for you.
I also mentioned it may be any idea to contact the Northants
Record Office about the Workhouse records they hold as it
would tell you when and which members of the family were
admitted and discharged.
Hope this makes it a bit clearer for you.
Sandy
-
HI again Zoe.
If you look back through the replies Gaie has kindly given you
a possible birth reference for Sarah Jane and an Edward in 1873.
Sandy
-
Hi Sandy,
You have nothing to be sorry for, I am hoping to go to the records office soon,
I don't drive I have to wait fir my husband to be off from work.
I know you list the burial records for me which I appreciate so much,
what I was asking was how you found them.
The Edward that Gaie mentioned he apparently died in the same qtr.
Thankyou so much for your help it is so much appreciated, as this side of the family I am finding very hard.
Regards
Zoe
-
Does the Northampton records hold the school admission list for around 1880, also which is the Nearest to Bristol St, that possibily Edward may have attended.
-
Hi again Zoe.
The Northants Record Office have Billing Road Cemetery Records on mirco film.
If you use my references you should find it.
I obviously have missed Edward as I can not see a burial for him.
I will re-check later.
Sandy
-
Hi again Zoe.
I have checked the Northants Record Office site and they hold some school records
although they do not say which.
The person has to have lived over 100 years so Edward record if available would be able
to be seen.
It again maybe an idea to contact the N.R.O. and hopefully they will be of assistance.

Hi Sandy,
I have contacted the records office this afternoon, & I am planning to visit on the 7th August.
