My objective is the trace the parentage of Mary Elizabeth Anne Jones.
I am beginning to think she was illegitimate.
In 1871 census she was a servant with the Vicar of Llandrillo in Merioneth
A month later she married John Edward Jones ( schoolteacher) at Corwen Registry office.
A year later she gives birth to a daughter at Peterston in Glamorgan.
The only reason I can think of to make that long journey is to be with 'Mum'
The details from the birth certificate are:
27/5/1872 Edith Girl John Mary Schoolmaster Mary E.A.Jones 5/7/1872
Peterston Catherine Edward Elizabeth Mother
Jones Ann Jones Peterston
formerly
Roberts
In July 1873 she gives birth to a son in Llandrillo
I am hoping that somebody is able to check the baptism to see if an address is given so that I can check the census returns.
Thank you for any assistance.
Regards Eldon.

My objective is the trace the parentage of Mary Elizabeth Anne Jones.
This should read Mary Elizabeth Anne Roberts as Jones was her married name
You have not given any details of her birthyear or birthplace as shown on the 1871 census
What is her fathers name and occupation on her marriage cert
am hoping that somebody is able to check the baptism to see if an address is given so that I can check the census returns
Is this the right family on the 1881 census?

''This should read Mary Elizabeth Anne Roberts as Jones was her married name''
Reply: Yes I agree: I was asking for a baptism check and Roberts may confuse the issue.
''You have not given any details of her birthyear or birthplace as shown on the 1871 census''
Reply: Very difficult: Her age varies by up to 4 years in census returns. Birthplace on all married censuses is St George which is a small village on the Flints/Denbighs border. Cannot find any connection there at all. However I notice that there is a St George SW of Peterston nr Llanharen.
Edith Catherine gives her birthplace as Llanharren.
''What is her fathers name and occupation on her marriage cert.''
Reply: Robert Roberts deceased...Smith. Cannot find anything on him either. Probably made up?
Could not understand why she would go to Corwen Registry Office to get married when she works for the Vicar of Llandrillo.

Reply: Yes; She is 35 on this census, and 21 when she married in 1871.(1 yr younger than husband) 1911 census she is 5 yrs older than him. Her death cert. for the 3:12:1923 has her aged 74yr. He died 6mths previously aged 72yr.
The journey to Peterston must have some significance. She gave birth on the 27th May and registered on the 5th July. She must have stayed there for 2 months.
I have searched on FreeReg but with no success.
Thank you for your assistance. A fresh pair of eyes can make all the difference.

I have now done some geographical work, because I don't know the area. I cannot find Peterston but all the censuses for Edith Catherine show she was born in Llanharen. Is Peterston a township within that parish?

Hi
Is this any help

Thank You for the link.
Yes I have seen this before but because I was not sure that Peterston was the shorter name for Peterston Super Ely, I have not done anyhting with it. Edith always maintains in census forms that she was born in Llanharen I thought that Peterston was in that parish but it not.
Birth cert. has birth in Peterston in sub dist. Maesteg in district of Bridgend.
Peterston is next to St George which is also the place name on the old Denbigh/Flints border (birthplace for her mother). I am quite sure that she was not born in N Wales, and to make that long journey (alone?) to have her first baby, then there must be a family connection.
Mary's father was Robert Roberts, Occ=Smith, deceased. (details from Mar. Cert of 1871.)
Perhaps a 1851 census check of Peterston/St George may reveal something. Something for the winter months.

Edith Catherine appears to have been baptised in Llanharan. I think the Peterston referred to on her birth certificate would be Peterston Super Montem, a parish adjacent to Llanharan.

Good evening Ruth.
Thank you very much for the babtism record. It shows that John Edward was the Llanharren school master so the family moved
to Glamorgan.
Interesting, because another 12 months later, they are all back in Llandrillo for the birth of their second child.
