I'm trying to find any information on my great grandparents, but i dont really have much to go on.
Richard Hughes and Christina Hughes ''Maiden name was CLINTON'', 47 Eden Villa's Dun Laoghaire. I'm trying to find out about his family and where he was from and same info about Christina Clinton. I cant seem to find any records on them, not in the 1901 or 1911 census.
I have no dates of births for them, but I can tell you their eldest daughter Theresa/Teresa was born in 1921. They had about 12 kids, two sons died in the house as the result of a tragic gas accident in 1944. Richard was always away in the Merchant Navy. They moved to the UK in 1955

possible marriage from the BMD Index... worth checking to see if it fit's, especially since the bride's name is quite rare, and the district is correct for Dún Laoghaire..
Name: Christina Clinton
Registration district: Rathdown
Event type: Marriage
Quarter and year: Jul-Sep 1928
Volume : 2 / Page : 639
also with the same references is a Richard Hughes
There are also Index entries for some possible children.. which I'll send to you by PM , since they are too recent for inclusion in a reply here.

Hi there
Looks like you will need to get the marriage cert that Shane has given you the reference for to get their father's names and occupations.
No defo matches for Richard, but presuming that Christina was actually from Dublin there is only one match that I can see
christina clinton 1911 ? (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/South_Dock/Clarence_Place/100428/)

I think that 'might' be her. in that link her fathers name is thomas. she has a son called thomas, so might have called him after him. i will try get in contact with her eldest son in the UK to see if he can give me any information to go by.
thanks

something else that might be helpful....they both died in 1986 (8 months apart) in Manchester, and are both buried in Manchester.

Hi and Welcome,
I remember the Hughes Family from the Villas and have sent you a P M with some details and contacts which I hope might be of some use.

Hi again,
Presuming the marriage cert confirms that Christina's father was Thomas - this is her in 1901
christina clinton 1901 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Pembroke_East___Donnybrook/New_Grove_Avenue/1285521/)
This would then be her baptism
christina clinton baptism (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/68fccd0276031)
This would then appear to be the marriage of her parents
thomas and susan clinton marriage (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/1d7a9e0446681)
Her mother's surname being Pugolas - very unusual
This is the marriage of a brother of Susan Pugolas
michael pugolas marriage (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/1b53650446603)
This has the baptisms of children of Thomas and Susan
thomas and susan clinton children's baptisms (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?name2fm=susan&name2l=&namefm=thomas&namel=clinton&location=&dd=&mm=&yy=&submit=Search&sort=&pageSize=100&diocese=&parish=¢ury=&decade=&exact=&ddB=&ddM=&ddD=&mmB=&mmM=&mmD=&yyB=&yyM=&yyD=&locationB=&locationM=&locationD=&member0=&member1=&member2=&member3=&member4=&member5=&member6=&member7=&member8=&member9=&namef0=&namef1=&namef2=&namef3=&namef4=&namef5=&namef6=&namef7=&namef8=&namef9=&namel0=&namel1=&namel2=&namel3=&namel4=&namel5=&namel6=&namel7=&namel8=&namel9=&keyword=)
There is a lot on the Pugolas' on irishgenealogy - there are a LOT of different spellings of this surname though !

i've run that info by a family member, and they said Christina would have been born in 1911/1912, that would answer why i cant find her in the 1901 or 1911 census

Hi again,
I was out in the Genealogy Society of Ireland’s office this evening going through the parish records for St Michaels Church and found your G/Grandparents marriage details.
Spouse Richard Hughes
Address 9, Bentley Villas Dun Laoghaire
Parents John and Margaret (nee Doyle)
Bride Christine Clinton
Address 30, Lwr. Georges Street Dun Laoghaire.
Parents Christopher and Theresa (nee Cullen)
Witnesses Patrick Kelly South King Street Dublin and
Mary Clinton 30, Lwr. Georges Street Dun Laoghaire.
Celebrant Ludvic Potter.
This is the 1911 Census return for your G/Grandfather Richard Hughes (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Kingstown_No__1/Cumberland_Street/100033/)
As you said your G/Grandmother had yet to make an appearance? but her parents were living here (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/South_Dock/Holles_St_/87434/) on Census night.

Thank you so much for this information, it is definetly them. They named their first child Theresa...which is also her mothers name. and the second link you put up there , there is a John Joe....they named one of their kids John Joe. so its definetly them. Thanks a million, this is a great breakthrough for me. really appreciate it.

Back to the drawing board so.............
The only marriage I can find as near is a Christopher Clinton to a Teresa McMullen - is it possible that the marriage records for Christina Clinton may have had a mistranscription of her mother's maiden name ?
Christopher Clinton
Date Apr-May-Jun 1907
District Rathdown
Volume: 2 Page: 888

Tara,
yes you could be right cause Christinas mother name is Theresa ''Cullen'', quite possibly it is McMullen spelling/typo
-
Hi Folks,
I went out again today and the entry clearly reads Cullen but on the off chance that Christopher was also married from St. Michaels the very helpful Eddie from The GSI quickly found the marriage details of Christopher Clinton of 3 Crofton Avenue Kingstown to Teresa McMULLAN of 106 Lwr Georges Street Kingstown on the 16th June 1907 so well done Tara

Only too glad to help, and it is really great to be able to give something back to this Site

Mine too; my dad was born on Patrick Street in Kelly’s Court in 1908 which was just up from Cross Avenue..
This then so is Teresa and her family in 1901
teresa mcmullen 1901 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Kingstown/Patrick_Street/1320707/)
Well spotted on the ‘Treza’ misspelling Tara, I would never have found it. It was more difficult to read the Clinton McMullan entry in the church register but a few definites’ were Arthur McMullan was a witness at the wedding of his brother Christopher as was a girl named Agnes C????? from York Road. Christopher’s parents were Michael and Maryanne nee Behan and Father Slevin performed the ceremony but I was unable to make out Mrs. McMullan’s maiden name.
The GSI office is situated under the George Monument at the East Pier and it is an Aladdin’s Cave for anyone who has ancestors from Kingstown / Dun Laoghaire. Hopefully ‘doylekelly’ will be able to pay a visit as she will more easily identify the names.

gilmartin 1911 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Kingstown_No__2/Patrick_Street__East_Side/95663/)
