hello Wondering if anyone could give me some help.
my mam has just moved and the house was built in 1895, it is number 131 but when i have looked back in the census' i can not find anything above 80's. how will i find what the house was in 1900's? She has not got her deeds back yet but she said when she looked at them in solicitors it did not have anything like that on.
Could anyone give me any clues how to find out?

You could start by looking at an old map, and seeing what has happened to the street since it was built. Oldmaps.com is a start.

Thank you yes i have it is Medomsley road Consett and that was always the name of the street but the maps do not have house numbers on

One way to approach it would be to look at Medomsley Road on a census (the later the better probably) and see how the enumerator's route went. Is no. 131 anywhere near a side road? I tried to see it on Google Streetview but didn't get very far. Perhaps if it was say 5 houses from a corner then you might be able to work out how the numbering went and find it that way? Landmarks like Pubs can be helpful in pinning down how the numbers ran. Street numbers normally start at the end of the road nearest the local post office, but of course there are always exceptions to the rule!
I'll have another look later after work and see if I can work it out.
Maybe the local library would be able to help you?

In 1901 the numbers appear to stop at house number 107, following that there are 13 properties on Medomsley Road without an actual number. One part of the road appears to be in the Enumeration District 17 and the other in District 18b.
It might be worth having a look.
This is just a guess but I wonder if the occupier of 131 was a tailor by the name of Henry Robinson ?

Having searched censuses from 1891 onwards quite extensively unfortunately I've not come up with anything >:( Larch Street and Collison Street are elusive, I'd hoped that finding one of those might lead me to the correct part of Medomsley Road.
Maybe the address was something like <builder's name> Terrace when they were first built and then allocated a number on Medomsley Road at a later date?
I think the library is probably your best bet. They might have something in their local history section or be able to advise where else you could look.

One of my distant in-laws, Thomas Leggott Staughan, died 1961 in Glenroyd House, Medomsley Road, Consett an Aged Persons' Hostel at that time. No number found yet!

Some of my relatives lived in Medomsley Road for many years.
I think you will find that the terrace of houses that your mam has moved to once had the address of 'Rosemount'.

I wondered about that too Mim, did you see there's a care home called Rosemount nowadays at number 79 Medomsley Road?

just asked a friend, Glenroyd House was adjacent to Rosemount but is now closed and converted to office space.

Henry Robinson, tailor, was at No 2 according to Kelly's Directory of Durham 1914.

this is in reply to heather's query
just found Larch Street and Collison Street on google maps.
Facing Rosemount Glenroyd House is to the left. Keep going to left of Glenroyd House. the first turning is Larch st. it runs a short distance down the side of G.house then turns left to run parallel to Medomsley rd.to the junction with Collison st.
Collison st. is in effect the 2nd turning after the care home.
