Can anyone help with a look up for the birth of Joseph Melia c. 1885 in Leeds please. I know his parents were Joseph MELIA and Catherine but when I looked on the BMD for Joseph and Catherine's marriage there are two Catherines... one called ROBINSON and one called CARTEY.
Any help much appreciated,
Thanks a lot

Hi Cyn
When I look in the 1891 and 1901 census I can't see a Joseph Melia born Yorkshire.
FreeBMD shows the births of 3 Joseph Melias 1883-1887. Two in Ashton 1884 and 1887 and one in Liverpool 1885. Where did you get your joseph's birth place and date from. Do you have him in the censuses?
Ah 1911 free search there is a William Melia born Northumberland wife Catherine born Leeds, possible sons Joseph 1885 and William 1888 both born Leeds in 1911. Where did they come from?
I'll take another look.

There is a tree on ancestry which has the marriage certificate for William Melia/Malia to Catherine Cartey. It shows on FreeBMD as William Malia.
I think you should have said William for the father not Joseph in your first post?
They have the sons of William and Catherine as William 1888 and Joseph 1885 born Leeds but the only proof they show for this is the 1911 census.
I still can't find this family in 1891/1901
-
Hi Crisane and many thanks for your replies. Firstly you are quite right. I should have said Joseph's parents were William and Catherine, NOT Joseph and Catherine. So sorry.
I too cannot find Joseph on the 1891 when he should be with his parents William & Catherine, nor on the 1901 census, which is very odd. But as you say he is there on the 1911 and also I have his marriage certificate when he married Florence Webster in Leeds, Dec. 1911 and says his age then was 27 yrs.
I'm actually doing this on behalf of a friend who was struggling and I can see why!!

Yorks bmd shows that the marriage was in "Leeds Registered Building".
use the same site to try and track Melia/Malia families by their kids & sub-districts.

Wow well done Jeannie and thank you very much.
I still need a look up for Joseph's birth though to know which Catherine was his mother. As I said earlier there are two Catherines on the BMD page for William Melia's marriage.
Anyone out there with access to Leeds Parish Records pretty please?
-
You can already confirm which Catherine from yorksbmd.
-
Cynn,
Have you tried searching for the 2 separate Catherines on a previous census, to see if the age and birth place of either of them correspond with Catherine Melia's details?
Failing a definite match - then I think you may need to obtain the birth certificate for Joseph. There is a Joseph Mealia b Q/E March 1882 in Leeds - could that be him?

I think it likely that your lady will be CATHERINE CARTY/Carthy on the 1881 census, she is living at 8, Plane Street Leeds, with her widowed mother, Bridget age 50, who came from Galway
Piece 4519 folio 41. She has several siblings still at home
I cannot find a Catherine Robinson, born Leeds , of the correct age. This Catherine, seems to have been 24 years old on the 1891 census, and came from Durham, she had two young children
Catherine Melia, died at 102 Freehold Street, on May 10th 1928, and was buried on the 14th at Killingbeck Catholic Cemetery . Grave section N , Grave No 99
Her son , William jnr died, age 20, and was buried at the same Cemetery 9th November 1918.
Section K Grave 73.
I am afraid that Catholic Marriages and Baptism are not online as yet
Hope this helps

Pauline I tried Yorks BMD. Joseph's birth is not coming up. It does say on that site that it is not complete yet.
June, thanks. Yes that's my next step now.
;)
Jeannie, was just about to post the above when it said another reply had been posted. Thank you so much for all your work. I'll take a look at that now but it's sounds like you've cracked it. :-* :-*
-
Yep all checks out so that's great.
Jeannie can I just ask you where you find the death details that also gives place where they were buried etc.
Thanks

Yorkshire Birth indexes for the years: 1882
MEALIA Joseph Leeds Southeast Leeds SE/104/343
What make you think Catherine is his birth mother?
Catherine didn't wed William Malia until 1884.

On the 1881 census......
William MEELY , Son of Michael and Bridget (both from Mayo )is residing at 16 Stone Street, Leeds.
William is a Concrete floor layer, and has 10 siblings
Cynn. I subscribe to Yorkshire Indexers about 6 pounds for 6 months. This is where I got the information re burials......
