Title: George Shepperd and Mary Bason
Post by: curtisd on Monday 25 June 12 15:00 BST (UK)
I am looking for ancestors of George Shepperd (Born 1796-02-08 in Taynton, Oxfordshire). He married Mary Bason (Born 1798 Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire). They married 1814 in Minster Lovell, Oxfordshire.

Kind regards,

Curtis

Hello
The parents of George were John & Priscilla Shepperd.
They were married John Shepherd & Priscilla Pittaway 25th Dec 1789 at nearby Asthall.

Lots of OXF possibilities for the baptism of John Shepherd, none at Taynton or Asthall
Priscilla Pittaway was bap 4th Dec 1767 at Taynton dau of Stephen & Zipporah

Stephen Pittaway married Sipro Rickens at Taynton 15th May 1759

I'm an OFHS family history advisor at the Oxfordshire History Centre until 3 pm today if you would like me to go further back

Hello

I tried first for the family of John Shepherd. The only one that seemed likely in the area was born in Witney 1766, but appears to have died in infancy. No others close to Taynton at about the right age. (You may have to try GLO parishes as Taynton is on the border.)

I couldn't find John's burial either - it might have given us his birth date.
His wife Priscilla was buried 10th Nov 1842 aged 76 at Taynton. Annoyingly it doesn't say either "widow" or "wife of" so we don't know which of them died first.

Also I couldn't find the baptism of Priscilla's parents, although my hunch is that Stephen was the son of John & Elizabeth Pittaway (marriage not found)who had children baptised at Taynton between 1724 and 1735 - perhaps his baptism was accidentally missed out of the register.

Stephen was either buried 31st March 1779 or 10th May 1807 at Taynton. His and Zipporah's last child was baptised in 1779, so I would guess the former.
Zipporah was buried 2nd Jan 1801 at Taynton (no age given).

As for Zipporah's baptism, the baptism database has only one Rickens countywide (a William at Henley in 1807). I tried variants such as Ricketts, but with no luck.

You were probably expecting a lot more - sorry, I fear the answers (or some of them) lie in GLO and I only have access to OXF information here.
Regards
Mick

Hi

Is it possible Zipporah's last name was actually RicHens?

Wish I'd thought of RICHENS when I looked at the RICKENS variants yesterday. I don't have the baptisms database at home, but I do have the OFHS marriages and there are some RICHENS marriages there.

I won't be at the History Centre again until July 9th, and will look for Zipporah's baptism if it hasn't been found before then.

No luck, I'm afraid.

I looked at a much wider selection of possible variations of the surname RICKENS, on the baptisms database including RICHENS and even RIXON, I even tried DICKENS but found no first name like Zipporah. (The database covers about 96% of the county)

On Minster Lovell pr Mary  Bason was baptised 9th January 1798 daughter of Elizabeth from Hardwick.  Hope this helps a little.

Hardwick St Mary the Virgin was (is?) a chapelry of Ducklington parish.

In Ducklington registers -
1770 Mar 4th Elizabeth BASSON baptised dau of John (no wife named)
Other children of John were baptised 1762 and 1765 so I looked for a marriage about 1761

1761 Sep 28th John BASSON of Shifford married Elizabeth DRAPER at Standlake.
No children of theirs were baptised at Standlake or Shifford, so this seems likely to be the correct John's marriage.

All these parishes are roughly in the same area.

Sorry to jump in on a long running thread..

Can somebody confirm the names of children born to George and Mary?
They married in 1814, and I have a possible son of theirs William, born 1817 in Great Barrington Gloucs.  However my first Census for George and Mary is 1841,in Great Barrington.
They are shown as 45 and 40 years old, but have a number of children ages 15 Charles, 10 Jessie , 8 Hannah, 6 Priscilla, 2 ???, 9mths George.
Did they have a large family over a long period? or are they not the parents of William (b 1817)
