Hi pompeyboy, does the marriage give her father's name.I can see a christening for an Annie Eliza Smith,St.Mary's Portsea 24 July 1864,father James, mother Jane.

Seoras..no afraid it doesn't..got the marriage from the usual options..ie freebmd..A......y etc.....have checked Knightroots but couldnt find anything on there neither....short of a cert don't now where else to go..will check the '71 census again with your info just in case.

The family I mentioned are in Portsea 1871 with Annie Eliza enumerated as anne. That marriage cert may be your best option though.

Think you may be right there Seoras..many thanks.

You seem very certain of Eliza's birth date - the last quarter of 1863. If you don't have any official certificate, but are relying on census information, there may be the possibility or error. :-\ Many Elizas were in fact Elizabeth and vice versa - they just love to make life difficult for us - and there are a number of Elizabeth Smiths, as well as Eliza Smiths (with a middle name) where the birth is registered in Portsea RD at around that time.
There are two possible brides for James Henry Hansler in 1883 - Eliza Smith and Eliza Ann Thomas. Have you established that it was definitely Eliza Smith who married James Hansler? From a birth certificate of one of the children perhaps, since you don't have the marriage certificate?
An Eliza Ann Thomas was born in Portsea RD in the June qtr of 1862.
I too think that the marriage certificate is the best option on this one.

There is one thing that could maybe help..in 1918 a Eliza Hansler died aged 55 in Portsea and her possible hubby a James Henry Hansler re married in 1927..just have to find out if a Eliza A Lewis? nee Thomas survived these dates..in these times of austerity one has to try everything before spending hard earned cash ::) :D
Steve
In 1911 there was a John James Lewis with a Eliza Ann Lewis living in Portsmouth with her age of 49..then a death for Eliza Ann Lewis in 1933 in Bristol age 70 ??? ???..possibilities....still trying not to spend ::) ;D
-
I know we hate to spend, but the names Thomas, Smith, Lewis are all too common. Either a birth certificate to establish which Eliza (less useful since you really want her father's name) or the marriage certificate which will give her father's name and possibly her age in years (rather than the ever helpful 'of full age' ;D )

Hi Pompeyboy, I stumbled across this site via google. Apologies if this is bad etiquette but this is my first post, I see you have an interest in the Hanslers from Portsmouth. If there is anything specific you are looking for I may be able to help. And again I apologise if this isn't the way things are done on this site.
