I am trying to find a birth record for Alexander Mackey, born about 1864. On his marriage certificate in 1897 he gives his father's name also as Alexander, occupation farmer. I have found some birth records for a Mackey family of Ballynure and also the 1901/1911 census lists a family in Templepatrick with the same names as the birth records. If Alexander was the eldest of this family, would his birth not been registered in 1864. Also is Ballynure anywhere near Templewick. The family were Presbyterian. Alexander was a constable in the RIC before he emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1900's. On the 1901 census he is living in Ballyhooley, Cork, birthplace given as County Antrim. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Moya

Templewick? Templepatrick to Ballynure is about 8 miles.
Civil registration of births began in 1864 and certainly in the later years not all births were registered but you'll need more proof to connect your Alexander to the ones you find. Since you only have an estimate and not an actual date of birth it'spossible that Alexander was born shortly before 1864.

Hi,
Some Mackey births in Ballynure where the father was Alexander and the mother was Esther Drummond who married on 3 Jun 1862 in Raloo Presbyterian Church, Larne District.
12 Oct 1868 Eliza
3 Apr 1870 Ellen
27 Dec 1873 Margaret.

Sorry, I got my temples mixed up (senior moment!) The birth records for the three children, can you let me know where you found them, and were they born in Raloo or Ballynure, I have been told that Raloo would have been the parish of the bride and the children may have been born elsewhere. Regards Moya

Yet another senior moment, have just re-read your info, I see it was Ballynure. Moya

If you go into familysearch - Ireland births and baptisms - and search for the surname 'Mackey' with father's first name 'Alexander', not only will Eliza, Ellen and Margaret appear to that father and Drummond mother, but also Jenny, John, Martha, Esther and Mary, the first three in Ballynure, the last two about 1 mile west in Ballycorr. Looking at the dates, and if this is the right family, then Alexander junior is likely to have been born before the summer of 1863.

Hello Gaffy. I did find the other children on Family Search, all on the Civil records. As the parents were married June 1862, it is quite likely their first child would have been born 1863, so not on the Civil register, and highly likely that he would have been named for his father. I have been in touch with the Presbyterian Church Librarian and hopefully she may find a baptism for Alexander. Thankyou for your interest. Regards Moya

All my research on the Mackeys of Ballynure have come to nothing. I have just been informed by the person for whom I am doing this research that the Mackey's farmed land in the Lisburn area, and that one of the brothers of Alexander junior was a bootmaker in Belfast. I have found an Alexander Mackey on Griffiths valuation, parish of Magherall, I also found a marriage in 1856 Lisburn. On the 1901 census the only Mackeys in Mullycarton/Magherall were farmers Sarah (widow) and son Jeremiah (born c.1875). The bootmakers name was Edmund Mackey, born c.1860. Edmund was Presbyterian. Jeremiah was COI. Is anyone able to look up the marriage record for Alexander in 1856. Thankyou, Moya

Familysearch shows a marriage taking place on 23 January 1856 between Alexander Mackey and Mary Jane Cummins in Ballinderry Church of Ireland, his DOB estimated as 1823, hers as 1834, his father James and hers John.

Thankyou for that Gaffy, not only did I find that marriage, but a second one to Sarah Hinds in 1868. One son from this marriage (Valentine) was born/baptised in Knocknadora,1871, is it likely that children born of the first marriage would also be baptised there, I can't find any between 1856 and 1868 on Family Search, can't even find Jeremiah's birth in 1875 and he is with his widowed mother Sarah on the 1901 census. There's an Albert Ford Mackey born to Alexander and Sarah Hinds on 4 July 1867..?
-
Hi,
In the Mackey/Drummond marriage the father is listed as John Mackay. In the MACKAY/ Hinds marriage the father is listed as Alexander Mackay.

And a Frederick Meekey was born on 18 May 1866 in Belfast to Alexander Meekey and Sarah Hynds..?
-
Hi,
1 May 1868 Edmund Mackay born to Alexander and Sarah Hynd
4 Jun 1871 Valentine Mackey born to Alexander and Sarah Hynds. Both births were registered in Knocknadona, Lisburn area.

Thankyou all, you must be up early !! (or late). It hadn't registered that of the two marriages for Alexander Mackey, first to Mary Jane Cummins and then to Sarah Hinds, that the father's name was different. Alexander was recorded as a widower when he married Sarah and I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Though I wonder if the record has been transcribed correctly, or perhaps a misunderstanding with the vicar (I'm clutching at straws). Alexander was definitely a farmer, not a shoemaker, however his son Edmund became a shoemaker (I have sent for a marriage certificate for him, so hopefully I've got the right one). Kingskerswell, where did you find the birth record for Edmund, 1868? (are you from Devon, with a name like that ). I found the passenger list for Valentine, going to America in 1892. I have requested a researcher ot look up the Royal Irish Constabulary records for Alexander junior, you never know, it might turn up something on his birth. Regards Moya

Moya,
I have sent you a PM and my wife is the Devon native.

I have more info on this. Alexander married Mary Jane Cummins in 1856, at Ballinderry Church. Her father John Cummins made a will in 1874 leaving 1 pound sterling to his daughter Mary Jane Mackey alias Cummins, he died in 1878. Presumably Mary Jane was alive in 1874 and probably in 1878, so the Alexander Mackey who married Sarah Hinds in1868 at Magheragall was not the same person. I feel the Alexander who I am looking for who was born in 1864 was probably the son of Mary Jane, but I can't find any record of any children born to this marriage. Has anyone any suggestions. Moya

Hello Gaffy. Where did you find the births for Albert Ford and Frederick ? Have further unconfirmed information that the Alexander Mackey(father James) who married Mary Jane Cummins emigrated to Ohio USA, so that rules them out being the parents of Alexander born 1864. What I can't understand is why I can't find a death for the wife of Alexander who married Sarah Hinds in 1868, as he is recorded as a widower maybe he took children into his second marriage. Moya

Both those births are on AncestryIreland.

Mary Jane Cummins is 'one of mine'! She and Alexander Mackay emigrated to US in 1856 (and were in Ohio for the 1860 census). He died in 1880 and she in 1909 in Ohio. I've tracked them through the

Yes, Jeremiah was the son of Alexander and Sarah Mackey. I have found that Alexander Mackey (born 1864) did come from the Lisburn area. I got his service record in the RIC and he was signed up by an Inspector Fleury who was stationed Lisburn at that time in 1883. So all I've got to do now is find out who his mother was !! Alexander senior is described as a widower in 1868 when he married Sarah Hinds, but I can't find any deaths for a female Mackey after 1864 when Alexander was born and 1868 when his father married Sarah Hinds. The only thing I can't get my head around is the records of a Frederick Meekey ? born 1866 to Alexander and Sarah Hynds in Belfast and an Albert Ford Mackey born 1867 to same parents, Alexander described as a shoemaker, Belfast. What are the odds on two Alexanders marrying two Sarah Hinds ??
-
I HAVE CRACKED IT !!!! I have found three children born to Sarah Hinds in Knocknadona. 1864 Alexander, 1866 Frederick, 1867 Albert Forde. Obviously they have taken the name Mackey when Sarah married Alexander Mackey in 1868. I am assuming that they were all illegitimate as there is no father's name on the ancestry.com record. Moya

Knocknadona is a townland and in a neigbouring townland, just off lissue road, on the knocknarea road there was a hinds family who worked the sand pit up until at least ww 11. they also had around 1900 had a shop in bow street lisburn, there is a photo on lisburn.com an article on that site written by the "digger" shows the family outside the shop

baptism records of magheragall have an entry for 1864 which will be of interest, i think
A Son born to Alexander Mackey and Sarah Hinds, address of father given as Moyrusk and Alexander is descibed as farmer. The baby was born on what looks like 1st August 1864 and baptised Alexander on 7th August 1864. The date is definitly 1864 and the month is August but the number is difficult to read.
Note the minister wrote along side this baptism "Base Born" i assume that means out of wedlock

Hello Magheragall. Are you the same person who emailed me some photos ? I am now starting to pad-out this Tree. I have found marriages for 6 of the sons, but can't find what happened to Albert Forde (Hinds) Mackey. Sarah's first born was William Thomas Carlisle 1862, he was a widower on the 1911 with his mother Sarah (Greenfield), but I can't locate any other record for him. I located one of the sons, Valentine born 1871. He went to USA, he was Valentine on the ships passenger list in 1892, but from then on he has the name James Valentine, at first I thought he was a different person, but have now located his marriage record where his parents are named as Alexander and Sarah. Do you know of any reason why he would take on another name. Regards Moya
