Hello,
I am looking for information about William Silas HARDING born c.1838 in the Farnham area.
He married Rose ROBINSON in 1859.
The only census returns with similar details I can find show him living with an Aunt and Uncle.
Details of his parents would be well received.

Hi,
A copy of his marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of William's father.

Familysearch has the marriage (transcribed as Hardin) 11/9/1859, Hale, Surrey. Grooms father also William Silas Harding. Grooms age 21 (1838)
Also on Familysearch is the baptism of William Silas. 25/3/1838, Elstead, Sry. Mother, Hannah Harding. With just the mothers name being mentioned it looks like he was illegitimate.
It must be the 1851 census you're talking about. He's with a John & Ann Jeffery in Frensham.
There are two deaths recorded on FreeBMD for Hannah Harding in Hambledon RD (of which Elstead is a part of) Q2 1839 & Q3 1839. One of these might be her & the reason why William is with an uncle,
PS. He's also with John & Ann Jeffery in 1841 at Frensham.

Great spot Jane,
I've had a look. I wonder if the parish register was damaged or undecipherable to the transcriber where the fathers name was or if as you suggest he was illegitimate.

Hi
11th April 1839 Elstead Bishop Transcripts burials
Hannah Harding aged 27
25th August 1839
Hannah Harding aged 51
It was common for illegitimate people to hide their illegitimacy on their marriage and give a father's name with the same surname as their own.
The baptism BTs for Elstead are harder to read (copies made of the register and sent annually to the Bishop) give the same information but include what looks like Hannah's status as spinster. There is no father's name given.

Hi Paul,
Valda got in before me :) The Surrey Burial Index gives these same two burials for Hannah Harding. My guess would be she's the 27 year old, giving her a DOB of about 1812. Familysearch has a baptism of a Hannah Harding, 26/1/1812, Frensham, d/o Abraham & Hannah. There's also another baptism in Thursley which shouldn't be over looked, Hannah Harding, 8/7/1810, d/o William & Mary.
