Title: leeds/bradford newspapers 1926
Post by: meathmitchell on Friday 22 June 12 02:32 BST (UK)
can anyone recommend the best local papers for the bradford/ leeds areas in 1926.  Martin mullaney committed suicide  on 28 May 1926 aged 30, and lived at 53 The Calls, Leeds.  I'm hoping to see if there were any newspaper reports relating to this.  He was buried in  Leeds Catholic Cemetery on 18 February 1927 and i'm hoping to find reports on the funeral if i can also. Any help appreciated

Does anyone know if Leeds Catholic cemetery has an online presence or is there anywhere that has a listing of the graves online.  I want some one to eyeball grave  BS2A - martin mullaney  and tell me the condition or if there is a headstone on it - i believe it to be unmarked but i want to confirm

The most likely newspapers to have had a report would be:-

Leeds Mercury, Yorkshire Evening News, Yorkshire Evening Post.

Copies of these papers are held at Leeds Central Library. www.leeds.gov.uk/libraries

If you are not in the area they will do look-ups for you.

Just checking re the cemetery.

There is a headstone on grave BS02A at Leeds Catholic Cemetery, Killingbeck.

The grave appears to be a 'communal' grave with 11 unrelated people recorded on the headstone BUT no Martin Mullaney.

The first date on the headstone is 14th Feb 1927.

If you are sure the grave number is correct put the question on www.yorkshireindexers.co.uk there are people on the site who have details of the cemetery. Like RC the site is FREE to join.

thanks ian,
BS2A was the number given to me by the Diocesan Archivist. Martin Travis Mullaney was buried there on 18 February 1927.   He died nearly a year before on 28 May 1926  - it was suicide, due to shell shock his family think - poor bastard was still living the war in his head.  Noone claimed his body  - hence the delay. sad really

Just had another look at the photo of grave BS02a (which you can view on the yorkshireindexers site) and the first burial is 14 Feb 1927, two burials 16 Feb, one burial 17 Feb, then next is 20 Feb.

Nothing on stone for 18 Feb.

Thanks for the help lads. Ill contact the library and see if they'll do a lookup for me as i'm in ireland.  His niece is very religious and is having a mass said for him, i'm going to look into having his name inscribed on the headstone or some marker put on the grave.

Could it be that the circumstances leading to his death precluded the inscription in a catholic churchyard.

yeah thats could be it.  It wouldn't be precluded now however - thankfully the catholic church's teachings have changed over the years

Hi,
You might be unable to make alterations to the headstone unless you can prove that you are next-of-kin / closest living relative or have a letter giving written permission. It would be advisable to contact the cemetery before you make your journey to find out what their policy is. You might be able to buy one of those flower holders with an inscription on it.

I have found the staff at Killingbeck most helpful when I was looking for graves.  I only had to give them a date and name and they found the results in their archives.  When I went to the cemetery to view the graves a member of staff escorted me to the grave side.  Their number is 0113 264 5247

Hi Tracy,

Pleased to hear the result and that you were able to find and visit the grave.
