Up to a few weeks ago I could get the old fsmily search as suggested by rootschatters and the almost Cousins web site. This morning I was able to fill in details on the home page of the old site but when I pressed search it took me to the home page of the new site which I don't like. The reason I don't like it I find it ties ages to find anyone and you have to plough through lots of unneeded names.
Has the old site gone for ever or has anyone got a clue as to how to use the old site.

Hi Both
Thanks for the link
I hate the new site as well. I can never seem to find anything.

Hello, I read this post out of curiosity and tried the link for the same reason. What a brilliant site ;D. I have got loads of new information and confirmation of family links. Thanks to all who posted it's been a real find.
Patty.

It doesn't seem to work now, just takes me into the new site.

Seems to have gone for good now, or has anyone found a way to access it?
The new site is ok in some cases, although it does seem tricky to navigate and I don't think all the records are on there.
The old site is going to be greatly missed. I wonder why they decided to cut it off altogether? I was hoping they would still allow access but not add any new records to the old site.
-
I hate the new site (and GenesReunited new site).
On Family Search you used to be able to put in parents' names only and sometimes it would show you all the siblings. This was a very useful bit of advice given by someone on this site. :D
I suppose that it's because I never like change. ::)

I had the old and the new site saved to my Desk Top, I went into the old site today and it sent me to the new site, so I think it as gone forever, it will be sorely missed

That's what I mean by "hard to navigate" ::)
But..... if you scroll down, you can find "search by event" or "search by relationship"
these are both very useful and work much like before......if the records are on that site ::)
and then there are the BTs for other areas, if you scroll down further and click on the country (Durham records are great :))
So you can filter a little for specific information but I also am not a fan of change (which is pathetic really!)
Hope that helps you a little. HL

How do you tell if it's a submitted entry now. On the old site it was easy, but I haven't been able to figure that one out yet with the new site.
Carol
-
That does seem to be the danger with the new site.
I have found some submitted trees entered at the very bottom of some of the pages (if there are any submitted trees).
Perhaps this is the only place they'll be and the records available are transcribed ones?
-

Carol - they come under user submitted family trees or a similar wording - after the other results I think. In general, against each result there is a source type - eg England, Cheshire Parish Registers, 1538-2000; United States Census, 1940
-
So, in a way, that makes the new site more reliable? :)
-
Like anything new, we have to practice at it but yes its more reliable and has more content.
As always though, transcripts can and do have have errors, remember to mention this in your source details!
Search the burials! I've been very lucky here, something that was lacking in the old search :D
-
I've got used to the new site, which I appreciate takes a bit of time. I find it better than the IGI - greater content, both with extra records & extra detail (eg names of father on some of the marriages).
For anyone new to the later version I'd recommend a regular browse of the Collections page(s) for the areas that are of interest as there are Collections that are unindexed images (these say Browse Images) - eg of many parish registers from around the Manchester area. They show the date added or updated & there do seem to be frequent additions - this is a link to the worldwide level you can narrow it to a region or country from the options on the left:
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list
Good hunting!

Thanks everyone

I am probably in the wrong place here :-\
I am sure I have seen sometime recently a way of getting into the old search.
I now can't find the post! Can anyone help? ::)

This information was posted a few months ago on the LDS site
We’ve heard from many of you telling us that the link to the Classic FamilySearch site no longer appears on the home page. This was not intentional and we apologize for the premature removal of this link. However, after careful consideration we’ve decided not to replace it. The reason for this is because in the very near future, we will remove the Classic FamilySearch site entirely. When that happens, the link to that site will no longer be needed. The shutdown of the Classic FamilySearch site will take place after we have completed the addition of some of our improved and new site features. We also need to finish transferring all of our data to the new site. Until we make that move, you can still get to the Classic FamilySearch by typing classic.familysearch.org.
The last sentence "Until we make that move ...... " appears to have now taken place and the classic search site (ie the old version) is no longer generally available.

Thanks everyone for your inpt.
I will put my genealogy hat on again in the Winter ::) and study the new technique! ;D ;D

This might be of interest: In response to an email to Family Search I received quite promptly the following as "helpful" hints at finding what used to be there. In terms of IGI that database is hidden in the overall collections list (see a previous post for a link) as International Genealogical Index . It is easy to miss as the Collections List is long, it includes some really interesting information, but it is there and can be accessed as a single entity.

Using the FamilySearch Website (20 June 2012)
Where to Find Features That Were on the Previous Version of the FamilySearch Website
The new version of the FamilySearch website still contains most of the resources that you used on the previous site. How you find them has changed.
The following table lists tasks that were commonly done on the previous version of the FamilySearch website. It also explains how to do them in the new site.
What You Could Do on the Previous Version of the FamilySearch Website
How to Do the Same Task on the Current Version of the FamilySearch Website
Search Ancestral File and the Pedigree Resource File
1.Click (FamilySearch Home).
2.Click Trees.
3.Enter the individual that you want to find.
Note: The search results indicate whether a record came from Ancestral File or the Pedigree Resource File.
Search the International Genealogical Index (IGI).
You can search the International Genealogical Index collection by an ancestor’s name. If you know it, you can also search by batch number, serial or sheet number, or film number.
a.Go to FamilySearch.org.
b.On the left side of the home page, click All Record Collections.
c.In the alphabetical list of collections, scroll down, and click International Genealogical Index (IGI).
d.Click the collection you want to search. Choose one of the following:
■Community Indexed IGI
■Community Contributed IGII (This collection is coming soon.)
e.In the Search boxes, enter the information you want to search by. Depending on the information that you know from the old IGI records, you can search by any of the following information:
■Names
■Event dates and locations (any event, birth, marriage, or death)
■Relationships (spouse or parents)
■Batch number
■Serial or sheet number
■Film number
Note: You may refine this search, as you would any search for historical records. Add more information to filter or narrow your search. For example, add an event date and place or a spouse or parent. Try a variety of search criteria. Enter a little information at a time.
f.Your search results will only show records from the IGI. If you do not find your record, search both IGI collections (the Community Indexed IGI and the Community Contributed IGI). Click .
2.Click Records.
Search the Vital Records Index for Mexico and Scandinavia.
1.Click (FamilySearch Home).
2.Under the heading Browse by Location, click the link for the appropriate area of the world.
3.In the filters that are on the left side of screen, click the appropriate place filters for Mexico or Scandinavia.
4.In the Category filters, click Birth, Marriage, and Death.
5.In your search results, click the collection of vital records that you want.
Use the Record Search Pilot.
The Record Search Pilot is no longer available. The record collections that were available in the Record Search pilot are available on FamilySearch.org.
1.Click (FamilySearch Home).
2.Click Records.
3.Enter the individual that you want to find.
Search Historical Books.
You cannot currently search the historical books directly. Instead, find the book in the Family History Library Catalog:
1.Click (FamilySearch Home).
2.Click Books.
3.Click Family History Books.
Search Family History Library Catalog.
1.Click (FamilySearch Home).
2.Click Catalog.
This version of the catalog is in beta testing. It does not yet have all of the features it needs. If you would like to use the previous version of the catalog, which does have all of the features, click previous verison.

That's really kind of you Katherine to take the trouble to post all this information.
I am sure there will be lots of folk who will benefit.

Thank you Katherine, there is lots of helpful information there and it was very kind of you to take all that trouble. :)
Best wishes HL

I posted a new topic about this yesterday in the Common Room as I had not seen this one.
I miss the old site, the searches were so simple
Each time something is "upgraded" to do with the internet I find it difficult.
Suppose I come under the catagory "you cant teach an old dog new tricks" ::)
-
Oh you can patrish :D
I can absolutely identify with any problems you have but we'll get there in the end.
Just end up with higher blood pressure in the process :D
Best wishes HL

I miss the old FamilySearch website but if you go into UK & Ireland and go to IGI then I use that way.
