Title: Stephens in Skipton
Post by: carol o on Thursday 21 June 12 19:26 BST (UK)
On the 1911 census my grandads brother and sisters are living in Skipton.

Mary Ann Stephens  1887
Marion   Stephens    1890
Maud  Stephens     1885
Nicholas Richard  Stephens  1895

I believe their father Richard Stehens died in 1901 in Skipton , don't know about their mother Mary Jane Stephens nee: Jarman.

Has anyone any information about this family , did they marry and stay in the area, or move away.?
Any information would be a great help.

Thanks for that information.

What a shame to find Nicholas died, I know my grandfather did not know that. Will have to follow this up and discover his story, thanks for the lead.

There are 2 Mauds in Skipton on the 1911 census. I think Maud Edna belongs to another family.

I have found Mary Ann marrying Fred Walsh in 1915. I think thats in Skipton.

Does anyone have a connection to Fred Walsh or Robert Chapman?

Found their mother died in Skipton 1912.

When you say you believe Richard died in 1901, have you a reason to say that Carol? It appears he was was in the Workhouse (possibly in the Infirmary) in 1901, but I can't find a death in the Skipton area during that timescale ?

I think Maude 1885 has parents Frederick and Sarah?

Hi this is the family in 1901:-

Marion 11 b Hunslet
Maude E 4 b Leeds
Nicolas 6 b Rodswell
Residing at 20, Kirkgate, Silsden

The marriage of Richard to Mary Jane was March 1886 Skipton 9a 33, which is why I queried the Maude born prior to this date?

Death Mary Jane Stephens Dec 1903 Skipton 9a 31 aged 40
Possible for Richard, Death Sept 1901 Wharfedale 9a 107 aged 50

The marriage of Mary Ann Stephens to Fred Walsh in 1915 can you provide details, as I cannot locate one?

There is a lot of information regarding the Nicholas R Stephens who is mentioned above here:

http://www.cpgw.org.uk/viewDetail.cfm?sID=369-06&view=main

Check out the various "view..." links at the top of the page.  These include a contemporary photograph.

This man was killed when the RMS Leinster was torpedoed in the Irish Sea.  He was a member of the 2/1st East Riding Yeomanry who were based in Ireland and was thought to be coming home on leave.  He is buried in Grangegorman Cemetery in Dublin.

Regards,

Neil.

Wow..............When I posted this topic I thought I would get some help , but you have all stunned me with the help I've received.

Thank you Neil for the help regarding Nicholas , the Craven site is fantastic and I will now spend many hours reading everything on there....Nothing else at home will be done now.....

Many thanks to Keyboard86. I see now I had the wrong Maud . I found a marriage on Freebmd which might be Mary Ann.
Dec 1912 Leeds.
Mary Stephens to Fred Walsh.
I have no other prove if its her.

I think the death of Richard Stephens in Wharfedale is their father.

I have trouble with the different areas as I don't know them at all.

My grandad was Richard Josiah Stephens. His mother Grace died in Yorkshire in 1885 then his dad married Mary Jane Jarman in 1886. He remained with the family , 1891 they were in Bourne.

I 1895 he is living in Leeds and signs up as a militiaman for the west riding regiment.
His address at that time was 5,Harthy Hill, North Street, Leeds.
Then in 1901 he was in Llantrissent, Monmouthshire where he met my nan Mary Griffiths. They married in 1903.
There are some photos with my 92 year old aunt that say grandads relatives so he must of had some contact.
Thank you all for your help. Now need to find if Marion and Mary had children and if any relatives in this area. Any more help greatly appreciated.
Carol

Hi Carol, what a wonderful post re Nicholas! Re Mary with a surname like Stephens I personally would not take that marriage for mine, especially with no mention of a Mary Ann, just plain Mary?

I have spent the last hour lost in the sinking of the RMS Leinster...... I knew nothing of this story before.....so interesting. Its lovely to see the information about Nicholas and to find a photo too was a bonus..really puts the flesh on the bones of the story.

Will not take this Mary marriage as gospel , will try and do more research on the family and maybe something about Mary will pop up.

I have found an old photo of a little girl and hand written on back is:
"With love from Emily Chapman to Uncle Dick."
This must be a daughter of Marion ( Dick is my grandad).

I will try and find this family now.
