Title: Locating a grave at Ford Cemetery
Post by: emmaginge on Sunday 17 June 12 20:59 BST (UK)
I am trying to locate the grave of my grandmother, Mary Bell who died in May 1957,aged 24yrs and was buried in Ford Cemetery
I am not sure whether there is a headstone there but the Grave number I have been given is B58.  Does anyone know if this will have been a public or private grave and whether it would be possible to put a headstone down if there isn't one already?

Would really appreciate any information anyone could give me as I'm new to all this.  Many thanks

Hi

The Ford Cemetery in question is the Catholic Cemetery in Liverpool. The burial registers are on Ancestry.

I think it might be a private grave as it looks like it was purchased by possibly husband? I don't want to post name as might still be living but if you select the link Ancestry have indexed as Mary Bell burial date 18th April 1957 you will find a grave purchase by a Mary Bell (grave B40) (different person?) scroll down the page and you will find the purchase of grave number B58.

Ancestry has a mixture of burials, grave diggers notes and grave purchases which can be confusing.
The person buried in grave B40 was Christopher Bell, age 68.

Thank you all so much for your help.  It is actually Ford Cemetary in Liverpool.  It was purchased by her husband.  Don't have an exact date of death but a relative holds a certificate with the grave number B58 on it.  I'll take on board your comments and hopefully be sucessful in my search.  Thank you all very much for your input.

There is a plan for Ford Cemetery here: - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hibernia/bur/fordcem.htm

Perhaps someone local could take a look for you and see if there is a gravestone.

According to the 'Section Usage' pdf, section B is a private area rather than public

Are you able to go and look at the cemetery for yourself, emmaginge?

If you have the grave number you've got a good start, because it's absolutely massive. But the map on the link here is good, so you know which section to begin with. Section B is on the far left side.

Just some experience to share...I found the grave numbers last year for my mum's grandmother and great-grandparents and my parents went to look for them about a month ago. They didn't have the map but they did find the right sections after some looking around (mum was very pleased she'd finally located the two graves). Once you have the right section, look for grave numbers on the back of headstones and they should be in numerical order. That means you could look for both the numbered graves if there's any confusion.

The cemetery is apparently in very good order but there's nowhere around to buy flowers. I think you can also drive your car in and park there.

I do intend to have a drive over to liverpool in the next few weeks to see if i can locate it so all the information has been really useful. I'm not subscribed to ancestry so i haven't been able to look at the burial register.

Thanks to everyones replies, it is very much appreciated.

This guy maybe able to help you.

Here is a map and some tips from the above website, I know the section you are looking for and it's quite small, for easy access park in Sterrix Lane outside the house's and there is a small walking entrance, go to your left B section is against the perimeter wall. If you park inside the cemetery you will have to traipse across the open section of public graves which is no good on a wet day. :)

Was your Mary Bell originally from the Ballynderry area of Co. Antrim, by any chance? Thank you!

Hi,
Ford B58.Private grave.
Deedholder is John Bell, 136 Chatham St L7.
Interred is:
Mary Bell died 136 Chatham St L7 aged 24 years, interred 28/5/1957.
My records go to 1989, so interments after this are not shown. No headstone is indicated, but that doesn't mean there isn't one now. perhaps another forum reader can tell you this.
The cemetery authorities will advise re the erection of a headstone if there isn't one already.
Marienne

Hi, I'm presently at Ford Cemetery, it's my day off and I'm looking for family graves. Doing a bit of research and came across your post. I've just been to the B section and have taken a photo of the grave (hope you don't mind 🙏🏼)
