Title: Dunipace, Stirlingshire
Post by: moira55 on Sunday 17 June 12 20:57 BST (UK)
On the 1851 Scottish census I found my 3 x grt grandfather James Stevenson and his family living at Gunners Hall in Dunipace.  Does anyone have any idea what this place was ?

Any information greatly appreciated.

hello moira
as far as i can see gunners hall is 8 different houses , and did you notice there is also a gunnery hall as well in census list .
but it may be more beneficial if this is moved to the scotland board hopefully you will thenn find people who have more local knowledge than me .
regards

ps will ask mods if they feel it would be best to move your post .

Hello Trevor

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

I wasnt aware of Gunnery Hall or that there were several houses at Gunners Hall and I'm not sure how to find this using Ancestry's  Census.

I would be happy for my query to be moved to the Scotland board.  I'm not very familiar with Roots at all and didnt notice that there was one.

Thanks again!

I've already moved this topic to STIRLINGSHIRE earlier this morning, Moira. Hopefully people with local knowledge will be able to help you.

Moira, if you are using Ancestry for the Scottish census transcripts, they also have the option to search by address.

Many thanks Monica.........I didnt know that  :o.

I'm just curious about the name Gunners Hall - and wondered if there was a Military connection.

James is recorded as an Engineer and in subsequent Census he is recorded as a Mill Engine Keeper.  He moved with wife and family to Dunipace around 1847 from Glasgow and moved back to Glasgow before 1861.

Many thanks for your help Monica ;)

Not sure of a military connection  :-\

A little here as background on Dunipace www.scottish-places.info/towns/townhistory311.html#

Can't really see it unfortunately but this is part of the 1865 maps from the NLS http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74972502 Main page here http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/stirlingshire.html with some further pages for the Dunipace area.

A useful guide sometimes for locations of places particularly in the earlier censuses is to try and find them on FreeCen www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

FreeCen give you the option of looking at the before and after entries to an individual address/family. It has 100% coverage now of the 1851 census so the Stevenson family is there. Looking at the previous address before Gunners Hall shows Denovan House. Denovan House showed in the bottom r/h corner on the previous map link http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74972502

Whilst I can't see a Gunners xxxx showing, there looks to be a lot of buildings right below Denovan House connected with the print and bleach works. I wonder if Gunners Hall is part of those buildings? If you look on FreeCen at the occupations of the people showing as living at Gunners Hall, the printworks do seem to feature strongly.

Hello Monica

Thank you so much for all this information.  I'm going to enjoy reading it and maybe find something that might connect with what I know of James.

Warmest Regards

hi all found this snippet of info from 1882-4 about denovan there is a calico printing establishment & an estate in dunipace parish , the estate comprises one fourth of the parish and belongs to forbes of callendar .
and  gunners hall addresses come under little denovan area according to the census 1851 , but still can,t find anything regarding why gunners hall and gunnery hall are so named , but the chances are that james stevenson worked at the print works as so many others did as back then no doubt it would be steam powered and before that water driven by the river close by .

The Scottish Volunteer Force was raised in 1859 to help counter invasion threat, plenty on Google.
