Hi this photo we believe is our ggggrandfather Jeremiah William Johnson (at least that is what is written on the back of the photo with nothing else - what you see is what we have unfortunately) - there is no card but we would appreciate even an approximation of era.
Thank you so much for your help.

This looks like a memorial card & probably a reprint of the original taken after his death.Men dressed like this over a long period but I would say this is 1870's.His frock coat has narrower lapels than the 1860's style & pocket handkerchiefs are associated more with the 70's.His hair which is long at the sides is typical of the decade. He looks quite young & in his late 20's - early 30's I would suggest.
Does this sound like him?

Hi Jim, Wow! You have confirmed a few things...Jeremiah W died in 1871, he was about 50 but we believed this photo was taken in his younger years. The confusion came in because our gggrandfather was William and we thought this might have been him. He died at 46 years of age but probably wouldnt have looked this healthy. Interesting indeed and thank you. We have not got the orignal but now I know it is a memorial card, we can search anew. Kindest regards and thanks!

I would look for someone born 1840's.
