Title: Canadian births
Post by: timetraveller on Saturday 16 June 12 13:35 BST (UK)
Hi All

Could some kind person please tell me if the following births in Winnipeg,

Edith Finklestein 1897
Marly Finklestein 1899
Kennett Finklestein 1901
Noel Finklestein 1904

were the children of Moses and Sarah (Loffman) Finklestein.  The Moses and Sarah I'm looking for probably left London for Canada sometime after their marriage in 1879 in London, both born Poland or Russia and Sarah lived in Birmingham before she went to London.

TIA

When you find your children in the index at the Manitoba Vitals website, click on 'detail view' to the right and you will find the mother's maiden name. I could only find 2 of the children with a quick look, Edith and Kenneth .... mmn is the same for both and it is Rosen. You will find a marriage for a Moses Finkelstein and Sarah Rosen in the same index. You would need to order the certs to get any additional info that might be available.

You can search for the family for free in the 1901, 1906, and 1911 censuses at this link. Click on split view at the top to view the image which has more info than the transcript.

In all places the name seems to be spelled 'Finkelstein' as opposed to with an 'le'.

Hi polarbear

Thanks for the info, I have Moses and Sarah's marriage certificate, they married in London in 1879, Sarah's maiden surname was LOFFMAN.

Sorry brain not working properly!

It's obviously not the same one.  Can't find my couple here after marriage so have been looking abroad.

I'll keep searching and maybe I'll find them one day!

Oops ... I missed the part about the 1979 marriage. Certainly doesn't seem to be your couple in that case.

It looks like this man lived in Providence, Rhode Island in 1885
Moses Finklestein, Tailor, 372 North Main

Jacob Finklestein, dry goods, 200 North Main, house 198 do.
Perhaps a relative?

They are also in the Providence Directory in 1887.

1890 Providence Directory
Moses Finklestein, house r. 444 North Main, Tailor
Simon Finklestein, boards, r. 303 North Main, Tailor

Again, relatives, or coincidence?

Hi Lisa in California

Thanks for the information.

It looks like it could be my 'rellies'.  Moses was a tailor as was most of Sarah's family.  I don't know if Jacob Finklestein was a 'rellie' as I haven't researched Moses family, Moses father Aaron was a dealer according to the marriage certificate in London.

Sarah was my maternal grt grandfather's older sister.  It's lovely to find out what happened to them at last.

Hi timetraveller:

I didn't see the couple on a passenger list.  I believe I did see a Finklestein, arriving c1883 (to New York) who was a Dealer.  I am at work today, so cannot give further details at this time.

Hi Lisa in California

Looking at my records again I have Moses and Sarah here in 1881 census but can't find them in 1891 or 1901 - tho this might be spelling variations of course.  There could be a way of identifying them, both Moses and Sarah were deaf and dumb.

Thanks again

Hi timetraveller:

I'm just on my way to work.  You're right; we might be able to identify them with the additional clue.  If someone else has not found them by the time I get home, I'll have a look.
