I need help tracing the parents of Thomas John Mulholland, born Belfast 7 September 1915. His son John Walter Mulholland, born *, wants my help doing his family tree, but does not know the name of his grandparents, although thinks his grandmother's maiden name may have been Marr. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A birth that seems to be likely to be Thomas John’s was registered in Belfast July – Sept 1915 Volume 1, page 388.

Hi,
25 Feb 1909 Thomas Mulholland married Jessica Marr in St. Annes Church of Ireland, Shankill, Belfast. Fathers' names were Ambrose Mulholland and John Marr. Both families are available on the 1901 census.

Hi,
The Marrs were all born in Scotland so probably married there but on 17 Jan 1883 Ambrose Mulholland married Catherine McAleavey in Belfast, Urban 2 Roman Catholic Church. The fathers' names were Michael Mulholland and Thomas McAleavey.

Notwithstanding some inconsistency of detail, this looks like Ambrose Mulholland's widowed wife and three of the children in 1911:

And John and Jessie Marr in 1911:

And Thomas Mulholland and wife Jessie in 1911 with two new additions:

There is the following marriage record:
19 December 1890, at no. 11 Craigend Cottages, Liberton, according to the forms of the Church of Scotland, officiating Minister Gray, D.D.
JOHN MARR, 21 years old, bachelor, horsedealer, Liberton, father John Marr, horsedealer, mother Alice Telford.
JESSIE SANDERSON, 21 years old, spinster, domestic servant, father Thomas Sanderson (deceased), labourer, mother Jessie McLeod, formerly Sanderson, nee Campbell.
BTW, Liberton is a suburb of Edinburgh.

Many thanks to you all for such comprehensive information.
My friend John tells me that he believes his grandparents, Thomas and Jessie, were killed when his father Thomas John, was four years old, aprroximately 1919 and that a sister went to live with family/carers. This is the limit to the information we have.

Thank you for the information Margaret. Althought it was removed I did see the detail last night, but today have followed the link and taken details. The real problem is finding Jessie's daughter, Jessie Mulholland, born 1882, and her husband, Thomas Mulholland, born 1890, who were the grandparemts of my friend John. The only information he has was that the were Killed (?) when his father was about four (1919ish). Could this have been anything to do with the troubles? I have searched on the link you gave but couldn't find anything.

Go to the GRO Roscommon website: www.groireland.ie/ Download the application form you need, and complete with the information you have, including the location, year, quarter (if one is shown), Volume & page number. Put that information on the lines for date and place of the event etc. Don’t worry if you have to leave some boxes blank, eg PPS number. Be sure to tick the box marked photocopy, if that suits you, as it’s cheaper. You then either fax or post the form off (there is no e-mail option for certs pre 1.1.1922). Their turnaround time is 7 to 10 days plus however long the post takes. Should cost €4.
