Title: Bayliss
Post by: Pilgrim1936 on Tuesday 12 June 12 02:45 BST (UK)
Edward Kettrell Bayliss was born 19 Aug 1874 in Gloucester.  He married Ellen Elizabeth Prosser who was born 29 Sep 1874 in Gloucester, but I do not know when or where they married.  Two children were born in Australia: Jack Malcolm Bayliss (June 1904 and Bernice Audrey Bayliss (30 Aug 1906).  Edward Kettrell and Ellen Elizabeth migrated to Australia and died here, presumably with Jack and Bernice in tow.  I can find no record of when they came, nor of their marriage, nor of their deaths.  Would anyone have any info, including census records in England, about their marriage, deaths, immigration, occupation, etc., please?

Hi

FreeBMD shows births

Edward Kettrel Bayliss  SepQ 1875 Cirencester
Ellen Elizabeth Prosser  DecQ 1873 Gloucester

GlosBMD  http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/MainMenu.aspx  also shows the births, with the addition of mother's maiden name (though not the Quarter of birth)

Edward Kethel (sic) Bayliss, mmn Evans, 1875 Cirencester
Ellen Elizabeth Prosser, mmn George, 1873 Gloucester South Hamlet

Marriage
Robert Prosser and Fanny George, 1869, Gloucester St James

I think the Prosser family found by Karenlee is not the correct one, as the Ellen there is born Taynton, and would therefore be Ellen Elsie Prosser born MarQ 1873 Newent (parents Charles and Emma)

GlosBMD also shows Edward and Ellen were married at Gloucester Registry Office in 1902

1901 Census

Edward Bayliss born Cirencester, with an age transcribed as 36 (I think wrongly as there is an enumerator's mark across the age making it hard to read), occupation Railway clerk, is shown as a visitor at the home of Robert and Fanny Prosser, in Howard Street, Tredworth, Gloucester. Also in the house is one of their daughters Nelly Prosser, age 26, occupation Milliner.

I hope you can make sense of this - I typed it as I found each bit of information.

Best wishes

Hi again - found some more information

FreeBMD births
Jack Malcolm Bayliss  JunQ 1904 Bristol
Berenice Audrey Bayliss  DecQ 1906 Bristol

From Findmypast - Passenger lists leaving UK

Mr E Bayliss   1875 Occupation Farmer
Mrs E Bayliss  1875
Master J Bayliss  1904
Miss B Bayliss  1907

It seems Edward returned to England in 1923 for a few months

From Ancestry.co.uk - Mr E K Bayliss, aged 48, Estate Agent, Departed Sydney, arrived London 24 Nov 1923, intending to stay in Bristol.
From Findmypast - Edwd Ketrel Bayliss departed London 1924 for Sydney (short of credits so did not look at transcript for this)

Herbert William Gray married Sophie Ellen Bayliss. My husband Laurence is Herbert's grandson. He knew Jack Bayliss and met him in Kingscliff.
It is 100 years since Baylisses and Grays came to Australia.
Celebration is being organised.

Currently we are in Ireland, but heading for home in a week's time. You can contact me directly at ecajaa@gmail.com. Regards, Clyde Andrews (Pilgrim1936).
