Ryan is a really common name in Tipperary. You'll need specific information regarding dates and places to have any hope of tracing members of a Ryan family. It's the equivalent of looking for someone named Smith in England.

The Bawn nickname I thought might refer to a placename but the only Bawn I can find is near Nenagh. The Irish word for the colour white is pronounced the same so it may be a descriptive nickname.

Oola is in Co. Limerick right on the border with Tipperary so it makes sense to post in both forums.

Hi kfryan
Your search for Ryan Bawn has been going on for quite a while and several posters have asked for more details in order to help you

The details that are needed are for example:
- is the person male or female?
- when this person was alive? (estimated birth, death, etc.)
- do you know any of his or her relatives, parents, children, siblings?
- did the person remain in Ireland or travel?
- did the person marry?

We cannot unfortunately help working off just a name with no guidance,
and Ryan, being a very common name makes any search all the more difficult

Bawn is the anglizied form of Ban, the Irish for white.
It was sometimes used as a nickname for people with very fair hair.
However, the surname White is usually Mac Faoitigh as far as I'm aware.

In the times when people named their children after parents and extended family
many people had the same name and nicknames evolved to distinguish between people.
People were often described
by physical features  e.g. Sean bawn (light/fair hair); Roisin Dubh (dark/black hair);
by age e.g. Young Johnny, Seamus Og;
by parentage by adding either the mother's or father's name
by place of origin by adding a reference to where they came from

A friend who is a Ryan from Tipperary gave me this information. May be of help.
"A Ryan (Bawn) family from Clonoulty were pioneers in Australia. The story of Ned Ryan(1786-1871) in Australia is told in King of Galong Castle by Max Barrett. The Australian singer Marie Narelle was also said to be a Ryan (Bawn). "
