Hello all:
Shot in the dark here, but I've hit a major brick wall..... My main line, the Taylor's of Well Street in Hackney has been traced to George Taylor, plumber, (1783-1836) who was buried in St Johns at Hackney and lived as far as we know, on Well Street his entire life. George was married to Grace Manning.
The trouble has been when I've attempted to go beyond George. I've tried on my own and utilized several professionals and spend many hundreds of pounds with nothing to show. I've been told that because Taylor is such a common name, especially in London, and also because it appears I come from a long line of George Taylors that any trace further back is difficult if not impossible. I recently spent 400 pounds and 6 months with a well know researcher who's initials are AA. He found NOTHING new.
Now to my title. A name which has come up a few times as a possible mother for George Taylor is Elizabeth Hopkins. I've never given it much credence because I haven't found any solid proof other than some dates fitting.
Elizabeth Hopkins married George Taylor November 22, 1783. in Hackney .She was 20 years old.
There was a George Taylor baptised at St Andrews, Holborn, Camden to a Betty and George Taylor.. If this Betty is actually Elizabeth Hopkins, it appears they had baby George and were married after the fact. Obviously I'm hypothesizing, but this could also be reason the baptised the baby in Holborn, but were married in Hackney.
This is all I have. Not much to go on I know, but I'm hoping some of the good minds on here can help find solid information that Elizabeth "Betty" Hopkins and George Taylor are the parents of MY George Taylor (1783-1836) of Well Street in Hackney. ???
Thank you

Hi Rosie! Thanks so much. I'm not really sure of anything . All stabs in the dark hoping to find something that sticks. I guess any of the ones you mentioned could fit. I don't have any of the names Of George's siblings so unless I can find reference to what I do know, Well Street, Hackney.. Or St John of Hackney, I can't be sure of anything... SO frustrating

Hello.. revisiting this post... ???
The marriage of George Taylor and Elizabeth Hopkins in 1783 lists one of the witnesses as Reb. A. Taylor....
I assume this was George's sister but I suppose could have been a cousin etc...
Going on the sister assumption I searched for Rebecca Taylor's born in the 1750-1765 and found this to be a possible match..
parents: John Taylor, Hannah
name: Rebecca Taylor
gender: Female
baptism/christening date: 1763
baptism/christening place: ST. JAMES', WESTMINSTER, MIDDLESEX, ENGLAND
birth date: 1763
father's name: John Taylor
mother's name: Hannah
indexing project (batch) number: C13550-7
system origin: England-VR
source film number: 1042308
I used the batch number and other items to see if I could find a george with the same parents and the same church, but couldn't see anything...
Then I tried to see if she had a brother named Christian Taylor which would possibly make her George's cousin...
See post... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,619978.msg4685402.html#msg4685402
Also no luck..
Any thoughts, help, etc?
Thanks :-\

Rosie.. Is there a marriage date for this Betty Middleton and George Taylor or death record? I'm trying to think of anything that may have his profession OR something that shows them living in Hackney in later years? Thanks

Here I am popping up again David, you have some interesting names with these families, I have most of them in mine too, now to find just where they might match up.
-
Hi David, what are the earliest records that you have to place George in Well Street please?
Jo :)
Also, the known names of his children?

Hello!! Very sorry not sure I ever saw this or responded.
1 am 100% of my George Frederick Taylor who lived at 126 Well Street and was married to Caroline Truth Broadbridge. their children were
Caroline
Charles
George
Alice
Clara
Arthur
Albert
Matilda
George Frederick's parents were George Taylor (1783-1836)and Grace Manning.. They married at St Leonard's Shoreditch in 1804 but lived at Well Street Hackney... Grace was from Culmstock Devon...
Their kids were
George Frederick
Catherine
Kitty
John
Alfred
All died young except for George Frederick and Catherine which is VERY luck for me as 2 of their children married and became my GG Grandparents!!!
Before this its just guessing.. I saw an Old Bailey record referring to Mr George and Mrs Elizabeth Taylor of Well Street, Hackney from 1770's (?), which my gut tells me are the parents of George (1783-1836), possibly George Taylor and Elizabeth Hopkins, but I have no proof and haven't been able to find any with a name a common as George Taylor :'(

What years and where please, I do have one circa late 1700s probably east end/London area.
Sorry found details on page one.
I think my Elizabeth Hopkins married William Jones 1794, however, may have matched her to the wrong husband.
