Hi,
Does anybody know how Sinnock Square in Hastings got its name?
Regards
Mark

Hi Mark
according to my 'Oracle'
Sinnock Square was formerly known as 'Tripe Alley' by the neighbours, since a butchers shop stood at the corner where the houses are Elizabethan. The name 'Sinnock Square dates back at least to 1773, but may be older. An Emmanuel Sennock, apparently the first of the name in Hastings, was married at St Clements in 1598. There was also a Sinnocks Row at Halton, and Thomas Sinnock junior was living there in 1835
Hope that helps

I was in Hastings in 1971 and made enquiries in Sinnock Sq. , seeking Sinnocks. I was directed to the nearby Library and Museum. A man there has a few scraps of info - no sources given. Here are a few:
1766 (date hard to read) Richard Sinnock bought Tripe Alley for 130 pounds (the cordwainer)
1768 Richard Sinnock , the cordwainer, paid 5 pounds to not be the overseer of the poor at St. Clement's
1773 Tripe alley called Sinnock Square
Subsequennt items were about a Thomas Sinnock in the early 1800's. I'll post if anyone is interested.

Chris,
Yes if you have anymore information on Sinnock Square or Richard or Thomas I would love to know. They are distant relatives of mine.
Thanks,
Amanda

Sorry, but illness has prevented me from leaving the house - so have no further input on your query.
Very sorry

From "Historic Hastings" (J.M. Banes, 2nd Ed., 1963, Appendix V, p. 362) detailing some public houses.
The Fortune of War was built by Thomas Sinnock, who bought the land then known as "Shelves", owing the Manor of Ore a quitrent of 2s. 9d., in 1810, some time before 1824 when Thomas Henbrey of Ore owned it.
Plate XVIII from the above ref. shows a drawing of Sinnock Square in 1843; I have not reproduced it here because I am unsure of copyright restrictions.
Any input from moderators ??
