Hi,
Have been chatting with a Rootschat member who has found some census records. I'e seen them before but only just picked up on the "Woodneuk Lodge" reference.
What was this and where was it? The census record is for Cadder in Lanark.

It was either 1861,1871 or 1881 - I can't remember and don't have the record to hand - the record I had didn't say it on it.

This is interesting but I can't see why they'd be in a hunting lodge, they were miners!
-
what was the family name?
-
Simmons, head James b abt 1830 in England - wife Susannah (Susan)
-
1881 has Robert Ferguson (gardener) and his family living in Woodneuk Lodge Cadder

I'm thinking it was 1871, could have the completely wrong end of the stick here.

1871 has a number of families living in Woodneuk Lodge including James Simmons (sp) puddler

This is him. If he's not working there as a puddler what are they doing there?
-
The occupations of other families at that address are all to do with iron working. There may have been a group of workers cottages adjacent to the lodge
-
Who did live there?
Is the actual lodge - and grounds if there were any - owned by someone important?
-
This looks to be the owner of the estate
Name:
Charles Thomas
Age: 69
wife's name :
Isabella K Thomas
born: Perth, Perthshire
Address: Woodneuk Cadder Eastern District
Occupation:
Coach Guilder & Ford Prictor Of 14 Oreghiet Of Farm Of 83 Acres
-
1861 and still the same owner recorded as
Occupation:
Coach Builder Employing 26 Man & 5 Boys & 1 Woman
-
So my relative could be one of the 26 working for him then?
Do you know anything more about the lodge? Does it still exist?
