Hello
I have a school photo taken in 1952 at Francis St somewhere in Melbourne Victoria.
I believe is could have been in the Footscray area as there was a Migrant camp close by. Does anyone know anything about this school? Grateful for any information.
Thanks Kerszk

Hello Lyn22
Yes I am looking for details on my own family. Father George Eric Parkinson, mother Ruth Margaret and 2 siblings Beryl and Allan. Beryl is in the school photo. I was just looking a the Migrant hostel in Brooklyn and wonder if that was where they were living.

The camp would be Maribyrnong Migrant Centre, the nearest State school i can see is Maidstone Primary though it is not in Francis St.There is a Francis St closer to the camp but it appears to be residential.Yarraville address doesn't show any schools.

I am working from 1976 Melbourne Street directory.

It's YARRAVILLE Primary School, 59-61 Francis Street, Yarraville. It was commonly known as Francis St School.
The school closed in the early 1970's & it's now home to the Yarraville Community Centre.
Here's a photo of what it looked like when your siblings attended it:

Just before it closed as a Primary School:

Thank you for your reply Morag
I think my parents and siblings were at the hostel around 1954. They then moved to the Latrobe Valley 2 hrs east of Melbourne.
Were you at the hostel? If you have any memories I would love to hear them.
I wonder who might have any documents regarding the hostel?
Thanks again
