Post by: seasider on Saturday 02 June 12 16:46 BST (UK)
I am looking for a marriage between Edwards[ the female ] and Mendes from around 1922 onwards, possibly in Cardiff.
Sorry I don't have any first names.

Many Thanks

Thanks for looking it up, I feel it will be earlier as a child was born in 1924 with the mothers name as Edwards.
 ???

MENDS, Edmund Thomas to a possible (on the same page) Elizabeth Ann Edwards in Merthyr Tydfil 1894
which may be too early?
and a MENDS to EDWARDS in Haverford West 1924 but wrong way round and its the groom thats Edwards

Trying to think of how many ways Mendes could be mis spelled

Yes thanks, I had thought of the name being mispelled, it does seem too early with a child being born in 1924. I did look all through Free BMD for Edwards and any near the name Mendes, I also wondered if Edwards had been married before Mendes and then the maiden name would have still been listed as Edwards on the record.

Think the only way you'll do it is get the bc for Rachel and get the fathers first name.  Theres only one Mendes in Cardiff for last census and that was Pascool he was a Portuguese man from Goa ... who was married and 41 - so maybe he and Miss Edwards didn't marry - unless he was already married to her by then?

You are right , I will get that certificate and see if that will get me further, the man from Goa is interesting though.

Thanks for looking

he was a steward aboard ship ... I had a look at Merchant Seaman lists and theres a
P MENDES  from Portugal aged 50 (in I think 1933) all it gives is his discharge number and number of ship he was on at time... might be worth pursuing

That is really interesting, I can have a look at what else that info. gives, and once I see that birth cert. it should give a better picture. I was just thinking they both could have been married before unless he was old enough to be the father of the Mendes I am looking for. What would be his birth year about 1883 I think, although his son might be too young for Miss Edwards and a child in 1924?

Thanks again

hmm  would suspect he might have knocked a few years off in 33 maybe to get the job - from the census if that age was right he would have been a bit over 60? 10 years seems a lot to knock off but I have a GGGranddad passing himself as 56 when he was in fact 72 !!!
Did this guy stay around with Miss Edwards/have more children with her?  ... I have some romantic picture of some sexy Portuguese  in dock at Cardiff sweeping her off her feet ... ships that pass in the night so to speak!

The merchants seaman records may have a next of kin/shore address ..not really sure what info you can get - its not something I've had to look in to - but I would image by 33 the records would have a lot more info on than the earlier ones

Yes, it looks like there were two more children in Surrey in the 1930's, to the same couple.

Thought you would be pleased to know that it does appear to be the 1933 marriage of Joachim MENDES & Sarah Maud DAVIES nee EDWARDS.

Have sent our friend Joachim's merchant navy papers which has his photograph on it!!!!!
Our friend is extremely pleased & she can see the family resemblance to Joachim's grandson!!!
Joachim stayed around in Cardiff but I don't know if they were living together when he died in 1956.
Joachim & Sarah Maud were both widowed before their 1933 wedding which would explain them marrying so long after their child was born.
