Hi, i was wondering if anyone could help?
I have traced one side of my great grandfathers family back to 1881, the problem i have found is finding out about his father. His name was James Evans, born in London around 1863 (1901 states Middlesex, London. 1911 states Epson London). I have found him on census in 1891 living in Gilfach Goch with his wife Margaret A Evans. Then i have him in 1901 with his wife still plus their children, Margaret Leah Evans and Henry William Evans, along with her mother Margaret Evans and her son William Henry Evans - all very confusing i know! Why must they all share names lol.
I have looked on the 1881 census for James in Wales but cannot find him, im guessing he was still in England then, is there any way to find him?
Plus why would he leave england for Wales back then?
Thank you, Lyndsey

If he really was born Epsom, that's Surrey rather than Middlesex
South Wales in the 1881s was a boom area -new mines and so forth - and there was a lot of inward migration. With a name like Evans he may well have family links back here anyway
-
what was his profession in Wales. There is a James Evans born 1865 Marylebone Middlesex at 9, Golborne Gardens, Kensington with parents David and Margaret Evans (both born in Wales).
Just a thought maybe although born in England he was Welshblooded and they just went home.
-
hi both, thank you for the replys :)
I too thought that he may have been welsh blooded somehow. His profession in wales was a coal miner then an underground labourer.
I have also been looking at one of the census and staying with James was a visitor named Ethel Evans born around 1876 in Bristol along with an Emma Evans born around 1907 in Gilfach Goch and an Albert Evans born around 1910 also in Gilfach Goch - id assume that these are her children. Could this lady be James' sister? Or maybe just belonging to him?
-
The reason I asked his profession was the James I found was a Tailor ... it would seem a bit of a huge leap to go from that to mining!
-
Have you found the marriage for James and Margaret? That would hopefully provide the name and occupation of his Father?
I can't find a marriage of James Evans and Margaret Ann Evans 1889-90 :-\
Do you have a birth certificate for one of their children, which confirms that Margaret's birth surname was Evans?
-
there's this possible
Margaret Ann Evans june qtr 1889 Bridgend vol 11a p 972 with James Evanes on the same page
:-\

What would the reg district be for Gilfach - Pontypridd? I'm trying to find births for Emma and Albert the visitors - I'm assuming Evans was their mothers married name (not the the BMD will give you the maiden name for these dates unfortunately) in which case if its a related Evans it's probably not a sister .. unless thats an Evans marrying another Evans!
On another note seeing as everyone likes sharing names is there a Leah in the family - maybe James mother or sister which may make him easier to find 71 and 81?
-
reg district for Gilfachgoch would be Pontypridd.
Who are Emma & Albert?
???
-
lol two visitors in last census that you mentioned with what is prob their mum Ethel.
-
I didn't mention them, that was ldavies, but I hadn't read that post....
:-[
-
oh sorry got confused .. actually I only just noticed that post for the first time just before I mentioned it too
-
hi, thanks again for the replies!
Hmm yeah tailor to miner does seem like quite a leap.
Nope i havnt been able to find a marriage for them either & unfortunatly i dont have a birth cert for any of her children :/
Oh i see what you mean now, considering she was married and an Evans then she's more likely to either be on Margret's side (which since Ethel is from Bristol is kinda unlikely) or belonging to James through a brother maybe?
I shall have another look for Emma and Albert now.
Also, since their all Evan's and that super common, one uncommon but sad thing about Margret is that on the census' it states she was blind from childhood, would this some how help towards finding her?
thanks, lyndsey

p.s baggygenes - you could have a point about the Leah thing, since they all have shared names, i'll have to keep an eye out for one!

I have recently tried yet again to find James Evans - would it be a long shot to say that he could have been in a Workhouse? or Orphanage?
I have found a census record in 1871 of an 8 year old James Evans living in Central London District School for the Children Chargeable to the City of London, could this be a long shot? or would it make a small amount of sense?

Here is James' wife in the 1881 Census - all living at 1 Prichard Row, Ystradyfodwg (Piece 5305 Folio 119)
EVANS, Henry Head Married 1836 Coal Miner, Crumlin
EVANS, Margaret Wife Married 1843 Merthyr
EVANS, Margaret A Daughter Single 1868 Blind from birth Glyncorrwg
EVANS, William H Son Single 1874 Scholar Gilfach Goch
EVANS, Robert Son Single 1876 Scholar Gilfach Goch

Hi, thanks for your reply :)
I have James' wife Margaret Ann and her family from 1911 all the way back to 1871 on census' but I still cannot find James himself.
I also believe I have worked out who the visitors are: Margaret's brother Robert married an Ethel and so I would assume it was her.
Thanks again

do you have a copy of James & Margaret Ann's marriage certificate yet? It should give info on James father & his occupation.

Hi guys, I know its been years but i am the original poster for this thread (new username) and I don't know if anyone will see this but I am still slightly stuck with this family. I have ordered the marriage certificate for Margaret Evans and James Evans (although its transcribed as Evanes) and it states James' father as Charles Evans, who's profession was a groom.
Now I have found a family that seem's to fit in 1861;
Epsom, Surrey
Name Age
Charles Evans 36
Jane Evans 37
Charles Evans 12
Jane Evans 11
William R Evans 8
Arthur H Evans 4
James Evans 1
Thomas Holloway 46
and I would obviously like to order a birth certificate to confirm it's the right family. However I am stuck as I can't find a way to guarantee that the James Evans I have found in 1861 is the same one as mine that came to Wales. Anyone got any ideas on how to try and confirm they are one in the same?
Sorry for the long post.
Diolch

have you tried following that Evans family in the census? I can see that Jane died aged 44 jun qtr 1868 Epsom. Also, the older children seem to be working in 1871 in the Epsom area - William & Arthur Holloway are stable boys, Jane is a cook.
Arthur Holloway married 31 Jan 1886 in Marylebone to Martha Elizabeth Walters, his father noted as Charles Evans, coachman. One of the witnesses is a J Evans. Could be James, could be Jane. The parish entry can be accessed on Ancestry, it's in the LMA records. You could compare the signatures.
Who were the witnesses on the marriage of your James?

thanks for the reply! yeah I have looked into the family and they all do seem to stay in the epsom/london area. I mean the plus side is there doesn't seem to be any sign of James in london so maybe it is my one then.
Witness to James' marriage was Benjamin Phillips and Ann Davies - so no luck there. I will try and delve a bit deeper into the family as i can't seem to find Charles jnr after 1871 so maybe he came to Wales aswell?
I've just noticed that the year of birth is slightly out for James, his age in 1891/1901/1911 is stated as 1862/63 but he's showing up on 1861 census with this family, dunno if that's enough to think its the wrong family or not?
-
he may have 'lost' a few years as he married a younger woman.
::)
-
that makes sense ;)
