Title: ANDERSON + WINGATE
Post by: Jeans Girl on Friday 01 June 12 10:12 BST (UK)
Hello All,

I am still looking for info on the Anderson Family.

I now have

JAMES ANDERSON d 24th mar 1883 buried Dimboola Victoria.

Margaret Wingate d 1882 buried Dimboola Victoria.

JAMES ANDERSON  appears to have a will granted 26th Apr 1883
could someone look this up for me please??.

Also Walter b 1872 Pleasanr Creek Vic
James b 1873 Pleasant Creek Vic

What would have become of the boys after the death of thier parents? would there have been a guardian appointed ?

Any suggestions appreciated as I have searched long and hard to no avail.

PROV will search is here, so you can have a look:

http://prov.vic.gov.au/index_search?searchid=54

Unfortunately there is only one digitised piece of information for  James Anderson -  a statemnt by a solicitor that there appears to be no will.  The index states that there was a grant of administration of the estate to "Curator".  I am not sure what this means  ??? (Could it be some kind of public trustee??)  Hopefully someone else will know.

I wonder if the boys were fostered or adopted and perhaps took on new surnames  :-\

Hi,

They may haave been fostered by members of the community they lived in. My Great grandparents fostered a newborn child when the child's mother died leaving 5 children!!. She was not related but grew up as their eldest child. (not sure who looked after the other 4 children but they all survived into adulthood)

Within the same community other children were taken in as Wards of the state of Victoria when their mother died and their father deserted them. All reached adulthood but had quite distressing childhoods.

I understand that these early records may be availble on line.

Regards

Robyn

Family members may have taken them in - from my calculation they would have been 10 & 11 - nearly the age that they could work and be an extra pair of hands.

Do you know what other family members there were living close by at the time?

Cheers, Ted

Hi Ted,

The only other family that I know of were the Wingates who were the Mothers Family.
Gabriel Wingate was in lauriston Vic. but he died in 1902.

Hi Margaret,

I have been looking at their Mother's family too. Now Walter the father died in 1883 the same year as James (the boys' father). I don't have dates so I am not sure who died first. Walter died in Clunes.

Mary Gilmore was already dead she died in 1866. However, I believe Walter remarried in 1871 to an Anne Jones. Anne died in 1912. she is buried in Creswick with a few other Wingate's in the Creswick cemetery with their residence listed as Allendale. There are no years mentioned though - only ages. Annie 69, James 39, James 79 and Walter 48.

I am off to find those deaths in the Ausralian index. At least I can rule them out.

Oh here is the link to Creswick cemetery so you can look yourself.

Ok here they are

Annie - we know about
James aged 79 died 23/8/1926 so therefore approx birth 1847
James aged 39 died 20/11/1912 approx birth 1873 - a possibility for James ANDERSON
Walter aged 66 died 1883 - he was Margaret's father

Ok I have ruled James out as your James Anderson. The age is incorrect when buried.

James who is buried in Creswick with the other Wingates was the son of a James Wingate and Annie Hillhouse. He was born in 1871.

Oh well! back to the drawing board! Sorry  :(

hi Ted,

Thanks for all your information I had looked at that one as well.
The Wingtes had a lot of Walters and James in their families hence th confusion.

I had found  a

James Anderson  state ward 1884 to a James Wilson ???
 James Anderson b 1872 inquest  Nov 1920 Ardlethan ??? age 48yr

James Anderson death  1943 17th dec  Barkly Victoria.

But not sure if they fit my James Anderson.

My James Anderson snr who died 1883 was a contractor .

Both He and Margaret are buried in Dimboola .

PROV has a will for Gabriel WINGATE of Yarraville, died 26 Mar 1902 - leaves all to his wife Janet.

The papers of administration (1918) for the estate of Janet WINGATE (died 1916,  living in Nth Sydney) list only these descendants and states that they are the only surviving next of kin.

Children:

Gabriel WINGATE (living in Elsternwick)
Walter WINGATE
John WINGATE
Andrew WINGATE
Robert WINGATE (deceased by 1918)
Jeannie SCHOFIELD (deceased by 1918)
Grandchildren:
Robert WINGATE
Walter WINGATE
Gladys WINGATE

This seems to imply that the Anderson boys were not known to the Wingate family.

Hi found this :'(
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/72872879?searchTerm="anderson"
Wonder if there was an inquest into his death?
Also the date given on the Childrens Register of State Wards is usually the birth year.
I will be going to the Public Records Office in North Melbourne, hopefully this Friday coming, and can look up the
Childrens Register of State Wards
Probate Administration
And Inquest into death if there is one.

Cheers Leonie

Hi Margaret
Have you read the will of Walter WINGATE of Clunes who died 17 April 1883?
His will is dated the 19 March 1883. His son Gabriel is the executor.
Walter leaves equal shares  to James, John and Andrew WINGATE  his lawful sons.
10 pounds to a Margaret KNOX of Clunes who was kind to him in his illness, and his watch to Walter WINGATE his nephew.
So no mention of the ANDERSON boys.
The Will was made only days before James ANDERSON died, around the 23rd March 1883, in Dimboola.
In papers by Gabriel WINGATE it says Walter WINGATE the nephew who was left the watch is the grandson of Walter, and that he didnt have a nephew named Walter. :-\
I cannot find any sisters to Margaret ANDERSON nee WINGATE so maybe one of her brothers took the ANDERSON boys?
Do you know if James ANDERSON had any other family in Victoria?
Cheers Leonie

Could this be your man?

TOWNSVILLE, 17 November 1913.
At the Civil Sittings of the Supreme Court to day the action in which Harry Jeftrey sued Walter B. Anderson, claiming a specific performance of an agreement for the sale by the defendant of the lease of the Central Hotel, Hughenden, was concluded The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff, with damages at £450.  Judgment was entered accordingly. A stay of proceedings was granted by his Honour Mr Acting Justice Jameson on the application of defendant's counsel. [(Brisbane Courier, 18th Nov 1913)]

Best wishes,
