Hi,
Does anyone know where St Nicholas Barracks,Lincoln was, (1881 Census) it housed the 30 Brigade Depot at the time.
I first thought it was where Lincolnshire Life is, but having been and asked, it's not. I was told by them it may have been somewhere near St Nicholas Church, ive looked on google and the only thing i can see that looks anything like is the Cadet Centre! (that looks as tho it's closed now) on Newport Road.
Any help most appreciated.

Hi Sue :)
Yes, the place on Newport was a Drill Hall and had a parade ground in more recent times but doesn't appear on old maps.
The Lincoln Barracks (built 1871) was this one http://www.heritageconnectlincoln.com/lara-raz/the-sobraon-barracks/803
Finding it on old maps shows it was in the parish of St Nicholas - choose map on right - here http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=497000,373200

If this was the cadet centre in Newport near the Lark pub, the centre was home to 16 independant parachute company, formerly part of 15 Para, then 4 Para from around 1984 till they moved to Triumph Road Nottingham around 1993.
I joined 16 company here in 1983.
I last visited here in 2008 on an ACF instructors course to use the indoor range.
There were still evidence of the Parachute regiment previous occupation in the fan tower in the main hall and paint scheme which must have been from when they last paraded here.
I understand it has now been demolished and built on.

Hi nicknickson, welcome to RootsChat :)
It survives on Google maps though http://tinyurl.com/dyx946g

Hi nicknickson, the cadet centre building at Newport is still there. However, it's now a block of " luxury" retirement flats. Sue
