Hi Please can anyone help me find the birth for catherine/Kate Corke born in Woolwich in 1869.
According to a newspaper report she was the sister of my Grandmother.
On our family tree there is no trace of my grandmother having a sister-only two brothers Herbert and William. I am thinking that maybe she would have been a cousin of my grandmothers.
Any help would be appreciated

What about the 14 year old visitor Kate COULSON born Woolwich in the 1881 census with your CORK family at Burton in Staffordshire?
The nearest I could see is Jane Kate COULSON dau of Charles and Priscilla of 2 Cambridge Cottages (Staff Sergeant in the Royal Artillery) baptised Woolwich 3 Jun 1866 (born 19 April).
If that isn't any use, what date is this newspaper and what is the article about?
Casalguidi :)

Hi Molly
Is it possible to tell us your Grandmas name and age as it helps when we look
at the census if there are other possibles in the family list.
Also, you mention Herbert being your Great Uncle, was he born
July 1870 at Tonbridge, Kent and was his middle name Henry?
I did find a Catherine Frances Corke born 1873 in Greenwich which
is next door to Woolwich but need some more info just to prove it.

Yes this is the family. Annie is my Grandmother. Catherine.s married name was Gold
so could not have been her sister in Law.
Thanks for replying. I am overwelmed.

Wow, no wonder its been confusing. From Woolwich, Kent, area of London for
Kate, to the fact your Gran was born in Alderney the Channel Islands.
This is why its best to put all you know on the first post so that people
are not spending hours of their time looking for a ghost.
Glad you have found what you were looking for but it would have
been easier if the information you are now giving at the end of this post
was available at the beginning. ???

So Kate COULSON would fit then as she married a Mr GOLD ;)
Perhaps the relationship isn't quite correct in the newspaper report or maybe they were brought up together as sisters even though they weren't actually? I see Priscilla's maiden name is WRIGHT (her widowed name was BOOKER when she married Charles COULSON) ............ what is Maria's? Could one of Kate's parents be related to either Benjamin or Maria?
Casalguidi :)
-
I don't know how reliable this is but Encyclopedia Titanica gives Katherine Gold's maiden name as Cook ??? (I suppose it is near enough to Cork ;D )

I don't know how reliable this is but Encyclopedia Titanica gives Katherine Gold's maiden name as Cook
Here's another article from http://www.fhindexes.co.uk/samples/titanic.pdf
this is some of the info. from the article
Mrs Catherine Cook apprentice dressmaker, known as Kate born 1869 Woolwich, living Burton 1881 with Benjamin Cook or Cork who it would appear was a cousin.
Members of her family settled in Burton including her sister Mrs Windmill & her brother.
She moved to Liverpool entered service for White Star Line and married Mr J Gold he died turn of the century.
Mmm...am I reading this correctly - please correct me if I'm wrong ::)
If Kate Gold nee Cook was the cousin of Benjamin Cook/Cork she can't be the sister of Annie ??? Perhaps they brought up Kate as their own daughter ???
I wonder what the initial 'J' stands for in Mr J Gold :-\

Her father was Charles Coulson Mother was Priscilla Coulson of 80 king Street Woolwich.

Going back over your thread I see from your reply you have already eliminated this Jane Kate Coulson b1866
-
Hi ladyhawk
Thank you for this. The only reason I eliminated her was because I could not see how
she could have been born in woolwich in 1869-when Grandma was born in Alderney in 1871.
The family must have moved to Burton from the C.I between 1873 and 1877. Herbert was born
in Alderney in 1873. William was born in Walsall in 1877.
I cannot trace any family at all in Kent.
It certainly fits that Kate Coulson was an assistant dressmaker, born in Woolwich
in 1869 and married a Mr J Gold. She was known as Kate Gold on the Titanic. I am afraid I have no idea what his given name was. She could have course have been illegitimate.
Anyway I will send for the marriage certificate for Jane Kate Coulson and see if that tells us anything.
Annie.s mother's name was Maria E chamberlaine born1837 in Bedminster Glove? Her Father's name was Benjamin born in 1835 Hadley Town Sussex. I gave a lot of this information out this afternoon but was unable to post it for some reason. I will let you know when I receive the marriage certificate.
THANK YOU ALL

That would be Hadlow Down!
And Maria born Bedminster - not sure where you've seen "Glove"?

If it is John Hannah Gold he is on Ellis Island website arriving New York from Liverpool 18th September 1917 a Steward on the 'Lapland'
Rosie

Hello again
The family tree that I have has actually been written by a cousin of mine. The name did look like
Glove. Grandma had 7 sons
It does get interesting-one of her sons was called Leslie Coulson Windmill (Coulson used as a christian name) He was a lamp boy on the Railway-and killed in an accident in 1919.
We also found on the 1911 census that Grandma had had a daughter who died in infancy, who we did not know anything about. (She could have had a sister that no-one knew about too!!)
Very Interesting about John Hanna Gold being on Ellis Island. He was a steward and Kate was a
stewardess-Mmmm.
I am begining to think I made a mistake when I eliminated Kate Coulson.
I will send for the marriage certificate of Jane Kate Coulson.
If that fails I will send for birth certificate for Catherine Frances.
Thanks again
Molly

Thank you "ladyhawk', I am not currently subscribed to ancestry but once was so I have the information you provided, but thank you.
What relation are you, in any, to the windmill family?
I think Molly may be my father's cousin - I believe Molly is Herbert's daughter.
I hope soon to have the time and money to subscribe once more to ancestry. I wish to visit the wall where john gardener's name is scribed. He had just buried a baby daughter of his and my grandmother's before going to war and to meet his end. It would appear though that they were not living together at the time of little Joyce gardener's death. All very sad.
Anyway, thank you agai. And I look forward to catching up again.
I was trying to discover where the coulson name fed down from. What relation was kate coulson to Annie cork, clearly not sisters. Annie's mothers maiden name was chamberlain so I'm stuck really!
-
Hi Debra - no relation just a member of Rootschat trying to help out with information :)
Hopefully when Molly comes back on line she may be able to fill in the gaps for you as you have now made the required number of posts you can use the personal message system to exchange information
Good luck :)
-
Well how very kind of you, thank you.
I get very easily distracted into other directions!
So my main objective is to find the relationship between Annie nee cork and Jane Katherine coulson....not sure where to start. I have seen "kate"s birth cert but cannot see how that fits with my tree anywhere, unless maybe Priscilla was a chamberlain or cork, grrr
