Hi, I have a William Hoskin b Langennith b. 1833 but I suspect this might be his christening date and maybe born 1831
In 1841 census he is living with his parents. Thomas 71 and Jane 45. There is a big difference in age here, but another census confirms that they are married. Siblings Robert 14, Amelia 13, Thomas 9 Jane 3. The address looks like Tile House Burry Green. Thomas is a farmer. This is the only census that William is living with parents.
In 1851 there is a POSSIBLE census record for William as a farm servant to another farmer at Llqnmadrock, not sure where this is.
In 1861 there is another POSSIBLE census record. If this is correct then William has a wife Elizabeth and they are living in Dunns?? Oystermouth. William is down as a seaman. I believe that there were two children here but cannot confirm this.
In 1863 William is down in Cornwall marrying a Cornish lass called Jane Butler and they go on to have several children. William states widower on marriage cert and that his father is a butcher.
William is a seaman but essentially stayed living in Cornwall after thi marriage, well that's where all the children were born.
I cannot find William in any other census
I cannot find a death for Elizabeth, if indeed this is the right entry, or any children belonging to her. I presume that they married in Wales.
Also, has anybody got access to Llangennith parish records. I would love to know a bit more about William's father Thomas and further back of course OR can you point me in the direction of any CD I might purchase to find this out. My brain is getting a bit scrambled on this man.

I wonder about that 1841 entry. There is an Amelia aged 19 shown on it - have a look at this IGI entry - father was a butcher but mother was Mary

Are you descended from one of William's children? If so - please give us the details of that child as it may help to trace back
What birthplace does William give on the various censuses?

Hello :)
There's a Christening of William Hoskin at Llangennith on 5th June 1830. Parents Thomas and Jane Hoskin of Tile House, Llangennith. Thomas was a Farmer.
Also Robert christened on 4th November 1825, James christened in 1826, twins Amelia Win and Jane were christened on 14th Oct 1827
The marriage of Thomas Hoskin and Jane Richards took place at Llangennith Parish Church on 13th July 1825.
Llanmaddock is not far from Llangennith
Kindest Regards
Morgan

There's a burial at St Cennydd Church, Llangennith of Thomas Hoskin, age 94, on 12th December 1865.
Also the twin Jane (mentioned previously) was buried on 6th November 1827, age 3 weeks.

Do you have William in 1881 and later censuses?
Will and Janie Hosking, plus children in New Road, Portreath on 1881

Modified - sorry I've just noticed that your Thomas Hoskin was a butcher rather than a Farmer.

Thanks Carole :)
I think that Amelia's age is 13 on 1841, although it's a bit of a squiggle, but it fits with the Baptism in Oct 1827.
It could be the same family though as Amelia born 1821 may have died, and possibly be the daughter of Thomas and his first wife Mary (as he married Jane in 1825).
Thomas and Mary had other children christened at Llanmadoc:
Robert 23 Aug 1816
Mary 30 Sep 1817
Mary 15 Dec 1818
plus Amelia 1 Aug 1821

Hi ladies and gents, thank you so much for tackling my Hoskins. I have been a long time replying as I was trying to make sure I had all the right details.
I have been able to tie in some ends and discount some details - all to the good.
To Carole, my husband is the great grandson of William. In the 41 census William Hoskin / Hosking states he was born Llangennith, 51 doesn't actually show anything, 61 cannot find him as I have now discounted the possible census that I had. 71 Llangennith (I think) or could be Llangennech and 81 just states Wales.
I now believe that William's father was a butcher AND a farmer, whatever he felt like at the time as:
In 41 census Thomas was 71, Tile house - farmer
51 - 81 Tile House, farmer of 6 acres
Williams marriage cert - butcher
61 - 91 Tile House Butchers House 90 butcher
It does indeed look as though William and Thomas both had two wives. with poor Mary losing most if not all of her children. There's a Robert christened Llanmadock 1816 and according to the 41 census a 15 y o Robert born approx 1826 - this one must be Janes. Mary 1817 and Mary 1818, neither of which are on the 41 census but the latter could have got married by then. and then Amelia b 1821 and also 1828 which must have been Jane's child again, plus of course the unfortunate baby twin Jane.
In the 1871 census William has two children in the family which are too old to be those of his wife Jane. Ellen 1854 and William 1857. I have not been able to track any of then in the 61 census so don't know who his "then" wife was or whether she had died by then
I am sorry if this has all come out a bit disjointed, - it's been a long day.

Morgan, meant to ask as well. Are these details that you have given me, re Llangennith and Llanmadock parish churches on a cd or something that I can purchase as I would love to get back even further if I can.

Is that the bit that goes RG10 Piece 2319 Folio 34 page 11 ?
-
Yes, found them!
On 1871 census, birthplace of William Snr, Ellen, and William Jnr was given as Llangennech, Carmarthenshire. However, I can't see the births of the children in Llanelli district in period 1852-7
-
I thought that it was Llangennech in the first place but when Llangennith started appearing then I had another look and it could just be Llangennith, not so very far away.
-
Thank you Morgan for the link to Parish Chest. I ordered Llangennith and Llanmadoc and they arrived this morning. I have found quite a few bits and pieces and also tracked down both of William's two marriages and both of his father Thomas's. It seems that I was right in that all of Mary Hoskin's children seemed to have died very early and it look like Mary herself might have died in childbirth in 1821
Still cannot find anything in relation to William's first two, Ellen and William. Very elusive.
-
You're welcome :D
I'm glad that you have found the 4 marriages. What are the details of William's marriages please?
-
Hi again,
William married Eleanor Chalk in Swansea, 4th qtr, 1853. Not sure about which Parish. Had 2 children Ellen b 1854 and Wil.liam b 1857. Eleanor died 1862.
He married Jane Butler in 1863. He wasn't wasting much time there.
