I have been given this photo. It is believed to be of a Scottish Soldier with gun & musket. Does anyone have any ideas. ? I have found another photo on the net and the arm of the jacket has a similar pattern on it. Is this significant ??

I can't help with the uniform but the rifle looks like the Pattern 1853 Enfield

My first thoughts were that it was a Union soldier during the US Civil War. Both sides used the 1853 Enfield, and the Union replacement is very similar. However the braid work above the cuff looks British, and I would say it is a Rifle Volunteer. Dating is a problem as they used equipment long after the Regular army had replaced it.
A better scan of the cap badge may help. He would have had to serve in a local unit as they attended every week. But if he did not serve as a Regular or Militiaman you have little chance of discovering a record for him. His local record office should be able to tell you details of volunteers in the area.

Hi,
The second uniform looks very similar to my wife's Gt-Grandfathers uniform.
He was a bugle boy, and joined the Durham R & A (Whatever that regiment is) in 1904 aged 14.
His uncle bought him out of the army for £1.
He was re-called up in WWI and served with the KOYLI (King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry).
I don't know if that uniform was the same for Bugle Boy's in all regiments, or just the Durham R & A.
Thanks,
Darin.
