Title: Photograph dating please
Post by: jackhonour on Sunday 20 May 12 14:57 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

I wonder if anybody could date this photograph please?

I would love to know if it was taken at the time my ancestors owned the pub.

Thank you

Jack

Need to see all of it please and in colour, outer corners included, also the back if there is any printing on it at all.

That's the whole picture I'm afraid and no writing on the back.

Any ideas on dates?

Need to see the surrounding backing style, also the actual colour toning of the photo.

My gut feeling is circa 1905.   JohnCH.

Circa 1905 is really exciting as my ancestors ran the pub at that time. I wonder who the people could be?

Man in the foreground gives the impression of being the subject of the photograph, or is wrong to suppose that he could be possibly the licensee.

The licensee (Charles Heydon) was born in 1861 so quite possibly that is him.

My apologies for such a slow reply, but...

As a 'real ale' fan, I found the W Blencowe & Co Ltd brewery in that picture of interest (I thought, I've not had a pint of that one!). So I looked it up, and bam, we find this page (among others):

http://www.blencowefamilies.com/nl/261/261-05.htm

SO, according to that page, the third William Blencowe died in 1888, then in 1889 it merged with Cannock brewery and it appears that it was known as "Blencowe Cannock Brewery" (I might be wrong on that one).

Is the chap on the left holding a number (on a spade) of "173"? Could the "1" of "173" be a reflection (like the edge of the board/sign/spade), making it a "73"? Or rather it looks like "173" been written onto the emulsion of the photograph as it was being developed.

Hi Trystan,

Thank you for looking into this for me - I think that number was just written on and not actually in the original picture.

I attach another picture dated 1908 - could anybody try and improve the man's silhouette so we can see who it is? I attach 2 versions of it - one original one adjusted a bit. Does he have the same pointed chin as the man in front of the pub in the first photograph?
