Title: Frederick Holden & Family, Bolton
Post by: chezbrunetfrance on Saturday 19 May 12 17:40 BST (UK)
I have been trying to trace my great-grandfather, Fred's,  family and have been able to find that he was born to a John and Jane Holden.  On looking thru census records I see that they also had an Annie who was an invalid and a Mary E.  Fred was born in Bolton in 1869 but I have been unable to trace John and Jane's marriage.  They appear on the censuses for 1871, 1881, 1891, (then John and Annie disappears) and Jane and Mary E are on the 1901 census but no trace of them on the 1911 census.  Fred was married to a Mary Barlow who then went on to have 5 children with my grandmother, Emily, being the eldest.  They were both also publicans for a time having the Lord Byron and the Egerton Arms in Bolton.  I am hoping that someone can find out Fred's mother's maiden name so I can trace her family and also John's family.  I have also been unable to find any registered deaths (except for Fred's) for John, Jane, Annie and Mary E.   If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be extremely grateful.

Regards
Chezbrunet

Hi Pete 51
Which of Richard's children does your family come from as mine relate to John who was Fred's father. I would love to see some photographs. I love learning about this and it is also nice to welcome extended family.  My father only knows about his immediate family and it has been really interesting to find out how the family evolved.  I sincerely hope that you get back in touch.  Thanks for the message.

Kind regards
Chez

Hi again his occupation from Crofter to a Bleacher and working in a Bleachworks is odd?
The other shown above needs to be looked at, or was maiden name of mother from birth certs?

Richard was born in Westhoughton  5 miles away from Mill Hill, Bolton, and no doubt he would've been a crofter as Westhoughton was a farming community. Any one who lived in the Mill hill area would've worked in the bleach works. Anne had a sister called Pricilla Bratherton and they also had a daughter called Pricilla Holden a very unusual name for that area.

Pricilla  Holden was born in 1850 and died in 1851.

:) Once again then, have you confirmed the maiden name from the purchase of that birth certificate or any other of family, you could well be right, but are you certain?!

Hi Pete 51
I've looked at your picture of the gravestone, have you been able to verify where Walter comes from?  On the stone it says beloved grandson died age 7 on 31/1/1883 which puts his birth 1875/1876 so he should have appeared on the 1881 census, but have had no luck with that yet. There are two Walters on the BMD list for that time one in 1875 and one in 1876.  I am hoping that you know.  :)

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Chez

Hi again,
just seen your message re Richard being born in Westhoughton and being a 'crofter'.  Did you know that the term 'crofter' can also mean working in the making of cloth.  After the cloth was bleached it was put out to dry on huge frames set out on open land which were called 'crofts' and if he was a man who did this his job description would have been 'crofter' and as most of his family worked in the cloth industry which was the biggest employer in that area then it could stand to reason that he was that type of crofter.
If you knew this then obviously I am preaching to the converted as they say.
Hope to talk soon
Chez
