Title: Divorce
Post by: br2az04 on Friday 18 May 12 20:16 BST (UK)
I think my GG grandmother may have got divorced and then remarried. In the BMD index i can find her under both her married name and her maiden name when i think she must have married her second husband.

Does it always appear in the index twice?

Her name was Marie Coker, her first Husband was Bradbeer and it looks like she married somebody called William Lowden in the 4th quater of 1919.

Why does she have to be a divorcee and not simply a widow?

She seems to be Maria rather than Marie both on the Sep qtr 1906 marriage to John Edward Bradbeer and on the 1919 marriage to William Lowden.

This looks like the divorce file:

It looks likely that her first husband John Edward Bradbeer was born Sep qtr 1885 West Ham, and died Mar qtr 1953 Hitchin aged 67.

They divorced in 1915

Type in John Edward Bradbeer and J77 into the department or Series Code Box.

Thans for your responses. Sorry i meant Maria, i have about a million names swirling around in my head.

I have found John Edward Bradbeer's death certificate in 1953 so i know she was not a widower. unless there are two John Edward Bradbeer's (he was the only one i could find with the right birth year)

How did i not know about this resource  :D. It makes a lot of sense now. I might have another divorce, how do you search it?

If you can get to Kew, you might find the divorce file interesting. The ones I've seen have copies of the marriage cert, the statement of the aggrieved party, and affidavits to confirm it all - usually fewer than 10 sheets of paper. Other names can show up, as well as addresses and so on. They are not electronic, you need to ask for the original document and you'll find that the file you seek comes in a box with some tens of others.

Hi,

I've had divorce files posted to me from Kew;  I think the cost was around £10 ( a few years ago) but there is a facility to get a quote before ordering.
