I have the Certificate of Service in the Royal Navy covering the years 1940 to 1946 of my father-in-law. The details are very sparse. It lists names of shore establishments and a couple of ships with the dates 'from' and 'to' and his yearly record of satisfactory conduct. The certificate does not include every ship he served on, doesn't state what his specialism was, the injuries he received in action or the medals and awards he received.
If I applied for his service records from the MOD would I get greater detail and, if so, what extra information may I expect? I am asking this in order to decide if it may be worthwhile ordering his records. All advice will be welcomed.

Go for it Rogden, order the service records, you may have to be patient waiting but l am sure that it will be worthwhile.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Best,
Steve.
