I believe there is a possibility that an ancestor was born on a ship on the wy to Auckland from England. I have searched the ship records and seven babies were born. So... If he was born on that journey where would his birth be registered? In England? Or in New Zealand?
Thank you for any help given :D

Hello Tiki.
My first question would be, what year are we looking at. Some of the early arrivals were well before the 1855/'s civil registration legislation.

Hello Alan, it was 1863.

Hello again.
Have you tried all possible name combinations for that year, or into the next year, on this site?

His name was Isaiah Robinson and I can't seem to find him! But I will try again

Found a death of Isaiah Robinson in 20 May 1916, age 48. This gives a birth year of about 1868. I did not find him in the NZ BDM for 1867-1869. His occupation was tinsmith. He was buried at Purewa Cemetery. His probate is at Archives NZ.
Death Reg: 1916/4042 Robinson Isaiah 48Y
Isaiah first appears on the electoral rolls in 1890, living on Pitt Street in Auckland. Also on Pitt street are John Robinson Sr., tinsmith and John Robinson Jr., tinsmith.
Does this sound like your guy?

Could this be him? Perhaps born enroute to New Zealand?

Thank you all. But I found the information on a headstone and I am trying to work backwards. He died on the 25th May 1881 and he was 18 years old. If he is from my line he was born in 1863 on the way to New Zealand as he didn't board with the family. I have checked BDM too and the death does not appear so possibly the transcription from the headstone is incorrect.
Back to the original question - if a child is born on a sea voyage, where it it registered?
Thanks Tiki

Hi,
I have one child that died on the voyage out from the UK to here and a few weeks later their sibling was born. Both were registed in Victoria, Australia.
Guess it would be the nearest port of call .... I stand to be corrected on that :)
Cheers

I think there is a diconnect between the name on the tombstone and the name used in the records. It would seem that Isaiah is Richard in the BDM records.
The Symonds Street Cemetery Anglican Sexton's list has John and Isaiah Robinson at Block C 156 and C 157.
According to the late 1950's tombstone transcriptions John Willis Robinson died 24 May 1863 aged 83 years, Isaiah Robinson died 24 May 1881 aged 18 years.
The St Paul's register has John Robinson buried 9 November 1870 aged 50 years of Newton Road. This is the father of Isaiah/Richard.
The Death certificate index for 1881 has Richard Robinson instead of Isaiah and the St Paul's register has Richard Robinson buried 25 May 1881 aged 16 years of Newton Road.
The Auckland Star newspaper, on 24 May 1881, had this article:
Death - Robinson - on the 24th instant, at Newton, Richard, youngest son of the late John Robinson, 16 years. The funeral will take place tomorrow (Wednesday), 25th instant, at 2:30 pm. Friends accept this intimation.
Poss Birth Reg: 1865/6200 Robinson Richard
Death Registration: 1881/218 Robinson Richard 16Y
Death Reg: 1870/2096 Robinson John NR
So if this Richard is Isaiah, he was not born at sea.

Thank you. I did not know if there was an Isaiah and a Richard. I thought what a poor family to lose 2 sons in the space of a day. I did order the death certificate of Richard and he is my family. Possibly Isaiah is his middle name?.
Do you think the John Willis Robinson who died in 1863 is a correct entry or is it the same as the John who died in 1870? One or two people???
Thanks you for untwisting it for me. Tiki

I think the John Willis Robinson who died in 1863 is not the same as John Robinson who died in 1870. There is a sepearte death registration for him:
1863/730 Robinson John NR

Thank you, I think it will take years to be able to do this properly. You really need to be a detective! Many thanks for your help I appreciated it.

Please keep in mind that if a child died, the same name was often given to a later sibling. A scottish tradition, perhaps others as well. My Scottish family sailed from England, so that is a possibility for your family also.
:)Just a thought. :)

Thanks Mackiwi, I am finding that too.
