Title: Charlton Terrace, Grimsby.
Post by: a j bayram on Tuesday 15 May 12 20:15 BST (UK)
My Grandfather was born there and, purely out of idle curiosity, just wondered where it might have been.

Google Earth produces Charlton Street which contains various businesses along the length.

Would I be right in assuming that this is the correct area and may have been a row of houses therein?

Regards... Andrew.

There seem to have been a large number of houses in Charlton Terrace in 1881 - but no Charlton St.  Looking for Albert LUSBY aged 26 will find the place if it helps.

1891, 1901 and 1911 are just the opposite, so I suspect they may be the same street.

Perhaps you can find people in the Terrace in 1881 who have the same neighbours in the Street in 1891.

Thank you.  I expect they are one and the same.

As Charlton Street is all business premises, my guess is that there was bomb damage in WW2 due to being near the docks.

You are right Andrew, there was bomb damage in that area, but I am not sure if Charlton Street was hit....my aunt lived in that street and I don't remember seeing bombed houses down there, but I could be wrong, the old memory aint what it used to be!!
I believed Annesley Street quite near to Charlton Street was bombed.

The 1964 1:2500 map shows the street and its housing to be intact at that time http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=526353,410130

I'm not sure but I think Charlton Terrace was further south than Charlton Street,  I will be in town over the weekend so will pop to the Grimsby Library and have a look.
If you look at the map Geoff posted, where the streets named Waterside Drive, Yarborough Drive etc are tthis was where the old Grimsby General Hospital stood and there were  a couple of long rows of houses I think Charlton Terrace was around here.  Not saying that this is 100% correct but will certainly have a look at the old maps at the library  :)

Thank you Floss, I do not want to put you out at all.

Also, thank you to geoff-E and Barleymow for your information.

My wife was born in Charlton St as was her mother and grandmother and this area was high density back to back terrace houses, she doesn't think Charton St was bombed but Ayscough St was, which, in those days ran parallel and to the East of Charlton St.
She has no recollection of Charlton Terrace.

Further information, while a death cert. states Charlton Terrace correspondence indicates Chantry Lane, Charlton Terrace.

I see Chantry Lane is not too far from Charlton Street and presume Charlton Terrace is a row of housing therein.  Would this make sense?

regards... Andrew.

Hi Andrew

Think that sounds right, As well as Charlton Terrace the 1881 census also lists Hartington Terrace which was in or near Chantry Lane.  There are houses still in Chantry Lane but not sure if any have the Terrace names on them, I'm in that area tomorrow so will have a quick look.

Thank you.  According to "street view", I can see a Belgrave Terrace.

There also appears to be a number of more recently built properties in the same road.

However, if not too much trouble, your observations would be appreciated.

Andrew.

Hi Andrew

Had a drive around Chantry lane and surrounding area, only other terrace sign I could see was Dudley Terrace, as you say a lot of  new houses have been built along Chantry Lane so it's possible that Charlton Terrace was here.  Sorry haven't been able to make it to library yet but have to go for something for myself so time permitting I will get there and hopefully we can solve this mystery  ;D

My gt grandmother lived and died in Charlton Street, so I have been interested in this.

I googled Charlton Terrace and came across this
http://genforum.genealogy.com/lusby/messages/175.html   which quite remarkably is one of my names. The listing of the Census shows  ( if the enumerator moved form one street to the next ) Charlton Terr as being in the Queen St, Victoria St area; so it`s quite possible it was where the shopping area or new roads are.

All I can see is a listing of all the LUSBYs that happen to have been in the Grimsby area in the 1881 census.  It just happens that the LUSBY family in Charlton Terrace is listed between the families in Queen and Victoria Streets.

To illustrate the randomness of this list, note that neighbouring houses - 104 and 106 Victoria Street - are not listed together in the list. :)

Sorry, I`m not intent on taking this over, but one of the christian names has a special sigificance to me so I was quite excited to find it !!

However, back to Charlton Terrace; this morning I asked my father 96, born and bred in Grimsby, in that area if he had heard of it but he hasn`t.

On Ancestry, which I don't have access to, you should be able access descriptions of each enumeration district and this would give some idea which part of the town these terraces were contained in. :)

Finally managed to get to the library  :)

Charlton Terrace is Macaulay Street, along with Charlton there was also Hartington, Elizabeth and Marriot Terraces.  I think it was end end nearest Chantry Lane as thats where the large terraces houses are.
