Title: Calling Mac Users: help with origins.net
Post by: nicknock on Monday 14 May 12 21:09 BST (UK)
Can anyone give me advice on viewing images on www.Origins.net on my Mac OS 10.6?

I bought a subscription and discovered to my disappointment that I can't view any of the images. They have kindly extended my subscription while I try to fix the problem - they don't seem able to help but say vaguely that they're releasing a new viewer soon.

I have followed the instructions on their site and downloaded all sorts of things that haven't worked. Now their instructions for Mac users seem to have vanished (unless I'm being really dim, which is quite possible).

The annoying thing is that a while ago I used to be able to use it with no problem. I feel sure that I must be missing something really obvious!

Has anyone else had trouble with this, and how did you fix it?!

Sorry i don't know origins but is there an option to email the image to yourself? Or maybe just downlaod it even though the viewer isn't working.

If origins do not state they are mac compatible, then i think you should ask for a refund.  Pointless buying something you cant use.

Has Origins' viewer been changed recently?

http://www.origins.net/help/helpimages.aspx

They state that their images are in TIFF format which requires the AlternaTIFF browser plug-in which will only work on Windows machines.

Another thing to check is that you have Java enabled in whichever browser you are using (not to be confused with Javascript which is different from Java).

Thanks everyone.

I can't find any options to download files or to email them to myself, and I can locate an option to enable Javascript but not Java on this computer. Cocoview doesn't work for me.

There were Mac instructions available when I started this process, but, as I said, they seem to have disappeared now, which makes me wonder if they're having Mac 'issues' . Anyway, I've emailed them again to see if they can do anything, and if not, then perhaps a refund might be in order. Shame though...

Many thanks again.

For Java:

In the Safari browser check or uncheck the tick box next to Enable Java in Safari's preferences (click the Security tab).

For your (Snow Leopard) Mac, find the Utilities folder and look for Java Preferences.  If the boxes are ticked as below, then it is enabled.

However, I keep Java turned off these days if I don't need it because there's a bit of a security problem with … er … a Mac trojan that's been active recently which requires Java to run.

Thanks Koromo

I've found Java, and it was already enabled so isn't solving my Origins problem... I've disabled it now, till I need it. I've read about the trojan...
