Title: Bolton from Gowran-Thomastown??
Post by: trazz on Monday 14 May 12 19:42 BST (UK)
Hi, I am looking for any info on a Robert Bolton. I cant find him in the Griffiths Valuation.
3 children I found to be born to Robert Bolton and Anne McDonnell. Jacob 1864 , Isaac 1866, Lucy 1868.
I think these were the last children to be born.
I think this Robert died in 1877 Thomastown. I found a marriage of a Thomas Bolton with a father Robert in 1867.

Thanks for any help that is offered..

Do you know what denomination your Bolton/McDonnell were ?

If they were Catholic then based on the dates of birth for the children the marriage would be before 1864 - so you would need to check for parish  records. Non-Catholic marriages were registered from 1845.

Hi, yes they were RC,  I know its hard to track down a marriage without knowing the parish.
Strange that he doesnt show up on the Griffiths.

for various reasons not everyone is listed on Griffith.. e.g. he could have been living with his father or other relative at that time and not held any property of his own

Have you birth certs for any of the children - or just the extracted records ?

hmmm that could be the reason alright. I only have the extracted records taken from LDS, think I will just have to purchase some credits on rootsireland.ie .

thanks Shane.

I think I'd try a birth cert from the GRO first as this should give you a more specific location which might help narrow down the area to start the search. Father's occupation might provide clues also.. (RC baptisms dont include occupations)

here's the record for Isaac :

  name:   Jacob Bolton
  registration district:   Kilkenny
  event type: Birth
  Year:   1864
  Volume: 8 / Page: 615

There's a possible baptism for Jacob showing up on the RootsIreland free search based on year, father and mother's names - but haven't been able to narrow it down to a parish..

that record for Jacob seems to be a civil birth (CP), rather than a baptism. The district is Gowran, which matches the extracted record.

I dont see any RC baptism for him - so maybe that took place in a parish they dont have, or where the records dont go back that far

I cant find a townland named Kilkane in the area... but would say that Thomas was probably buried in Thomastown. RC Parishes didnt usually keep burial records at this time, but there may have been a headstone if the family could afford one.

There seems to be two areas near the parish church in Thomastown where burials took place - see the slightly later (c1890) OSI map:

   RC Church & Graveyard - Thomastown (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,658701,642158,7,9)

Even though Robert died in the area, it's possible that he could have been buried elsewhere - e.g. maybe the area his family originated.

Hi Shanew. I think the townland you are looking for is KILFANE, about three miles from thomastown on the road to gowran. I remember my father talking about a man called Bob Bolton who lived about a mile up the road from where we lived  in the townland of either DYSART or PLEBERSTOWN  in the parish of Thomastown. Not too sure but i think a nephew of the man my Dad spoke about died about a month ago. Hope this is of some help

thanks - that makes sense, so a mistranscription...

here it is on Google Maps - just over 4km north of Thomastown.

   Thomastown to Kilfane (http://g.co/maps/dfvbj)

The townland database shows townlands named Kilfane East & West - both of just over 90 acres.
