I'm descended from William McAulley, S/O Alexander and Ladie Davidson born 10/9/1785 Resolis, Ross and Cromarty. William died 9/12/1856 in Lumphanan and was married to Mary Milne, date unknown.
My line comes through their daughter Elspet however I'm looking for information on the other children before I go to GROS to look for Marriage and Death Certs but the surname variant is getting the better of me ~ McAulley, McCauly, McAulay, MacAulay & McAulley.
Children I'm interested in are, all born Waulkmill, KON:
Margaret 27/11/1819
William 12/9/1825
Andrew 24/8/1827
Christian 17/2/1830
Robert 9/4/1833
Many thanks.

Hi, if you're looking for information on B,M,D's in Scotland then the place to look is scotlandspeople website. There are many posts on that topic in Scotland resourses if you need help with your search. Can you tell me what censuses you've found the McAuley family on? I found William McAuley H W 62 road maker born Inverness living with his daughter Christian,20 unmarried, a factory worker born K.O.N. at 37 North Broadford, Old Machar, Aberdeen in the 1851 census. I found this in the freecen website. Who was the informant on William's death certificate? If it was one of his children then their name & address will appear on that certificate.
hope this helps,

Success! I searched for any Mcauley deaths on the Aberdeen & North East Scotland Family History Society's website & saw one for a Margaret McAuley in Aboyne graveyard.Died 5th Nov 1893As it's only an index to the inscriptions I hazarded a guess that the others on that headstone would be linked to her. I assumed that James Black was her husband. On familysearch I found a marriage for the couple in the parish of Old Machar, June 1st 1848.I went back on freecen & found this entry for 1851.
New Bridge Of Don.
James Black,35,Miller born Aberdeen.
Margaret,31,wife, born K.O.N.
Sarah ,14,dau,born Belhelvie.
William ,7,son born Aberdeen
Andrew,8m,son also born Aberdeen.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I’ve managed to find William Snr in the 1841 and 1851 Census Records at Don Village and North Broadford respectively. Have also managed to find William Jnr in the 1851 Census (Oyne) and also worked out that Margaret married James Black in 1848 and died in 1893. Nothing more on the rest of the family yet.
Now off to try some searching on Ancestry using birth years and Kincardine O Neil in the search box but not using a surname due to spelling variants. Might come up with something.
Noticed on Ancestry that someone has put up a private photograph of the family. Will get in touch with them to see if they can help me out with my search.
I don’t like using Scotlands People as it’s quite expensive which I found out to my cost when researching Smith ancestors. I often get through to Edinburgh and it works out a lot cheaper when I’ve got a lot to research.
Cheers

Hi Pittyman67
You can use a wildcard on Ancestry of '*'. You need at least three letters somewhere in the search string. For example for McAuley and variants, you could search as M*c*a*l* (or whatever combination you want to try).
