I really ought to know this, living in Hull, but I have a marriage certificate which says the wedding took place in the Parish Church, Sculcoates. Does anyone know which church that was?

Hi
Would thefollowing be the one?
ST MARYS PARISH CHURCH SCULCOATES LANE HULL NORTH HUMBERSIDE HU5 1DP Distance from Hull: 0.91 miles.

I've found links to photos of 3 churches in Sculcoates at:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Sculcoates/
The first two look decidely modern so it's probably the third one. I'm looking too as I've just sent for the certificate for the marriage of my gg Grandparents in Sculcoates in 1846. They were both born in Beckingham, Nottinghamshire and had their first child there so I'm intrigued to know why they got married in Sculcoates!

Thanks for everybody's help. I've done a bit of googling and I think it was All Saints, Margaret St. after the 1870s.

Just for anyone that's interested,
All Saints' Sculcoates, Margaret street, consecrated in 1869 and took over from St Mary's Sculcoates, the mother church, as Parish church. All Saints is now demolished.

All Saints is where a number of my Sculcoates ancestors were baptised/married/buried. Shame it's not there any more. St Mark's is similarly no longer with us and several of my ancestors got married there too. Is there any particular reason why they were demolished? From the look of it, St Mark's was a bit of a monstrosity, but that's no reason in itself to pull it down. Did they get hit by bombs in the war?

Hi Nick,
I found this info on the internet about St Marks that you may find useful.
"...St Marks (in the Groves), St Mark's Street, Hull.
It was concerated in 1844 with the district taken from Sutton and the extra-parochial district of Garrison Side in 1844. It was badly damaged during WW2 and closed in 1948 and demolished in 1958/9. The parish was combined with that of St Saviour. The site is now occupied by industry...".

I have a book called "Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull" (not to hand at the moment). If anyone wants to know what happened to a church perhaps I can help.

All Saints church in Margaret Street was still standing, and I think in use, in the late 1960's. (my first serious boyfriend lived across the road from the church).

Demolished in 1974, my book tells me.

Susan, I know the feeling. The addresses at which many of my 19th century ancestors were living are now light industrial units (if the name still exists today). There are a number sets of photographs going back to the early part of the last century on the web that cover this area, but none that I have found shows any of the streets of interest to me. I think the http://www.hullwebs.co.uk/ site is a good starting point.

THAT SITE IS GOOD THANKS FOR THE ADDRESS.

'St Mark in the Groves' St mark Street, Hull was consecrated 1844 - 1948. It was created from part of Sutton parish and Garrison Side. Badly damaged in WW2 the parish united with St Saviour in 1957 and St Marks church was demolished in 1958/9.
