Title: William Mcaleese Married Agnes Leese - help needed please
Post by: Rose123 on Saturday 12 May 12 11:38 BST (UK)
I need help with finding out any information on William James McAleese who married John and Nancy's daughter Agnes Adams Leese. William's parents are James McLese and Ann Robinson of Killure, Coleraine. Williams was born 28/3/1876 in Killure and he died in New Zealand in 1938. We know all about his NZ family but not much back from there.

We would like any info on James and Ann and their families. We have no dates for anything for them

We know William and Agnes left for NZ from Largs with their 4 children in 1926 and that Williams brother john want to see them off.

Thanks
Rose :)

Previous thread with lots of information-
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,528403

LDS database (www.familysearch.org):
~ Margaret Ann McLeise born 1 July 1880 Macosquin sub-registration district- parents James McLeise & Ann Robinson
~ John Alexander Mcaluse born 21 Feb.1878 Co.Londonderry- parents James Mcaluse & Ann Robinson

Robinson and Robertson are used interchangeably in the area.

Have you found the family in 1901 and 1911 census? when did they move to Scotland?

The marriage certificate of James and Ann Jane will list their residences at time of marriage, James' occupation and names and occupations of both fathers.

The surname is one with numerous variations- McAleese, McAlees, McAllice, McAlice, McLeese, McLees, McAleice, McAleise...

I thibnk I found the family in 1901 census-
10 Mill St., Greenock (all born Ireland)
James McAleese, 49, fitters labourer
wife Ann McAleese, 50
son Wm. Jas. McAleese, 24, distillery maker
dau. Susan McAleese, 19, rope spinner
dau. Lizzie McAleese, 17, wool winder
grandson W. Jas. Alexander, 3

The address Mill Street makes sense as I was told by a friend whose family also lived there that it was full of people from Aghadowey area who came to work in the mills (Aghadowey parish marches Macosquin parish).

If James and Ann Jane died in Scotland there may be more details included on their death certificates. See Scotland's People website to see what is included on Scottish death certificates for 1900s.

I have by chance come across your message after inserting Killure into Google.
I am part of this family and live in Scotland.  My grandmother was Susannah McAleese the sister of William who went to NZ. She remained in Greenock and died there in 1980 at the age of 97! She was widowed in her 40s and brought up 4 children ( 3 female, 1male). One daughter is alive (88) and lives in England.
Her sister Lizzie( 5 sons, all dead) also remained in Greenock and John who accompanied William and family when they left for NZ, went to live in Bournemouth where he died. He had one daughter - our family had no contact with her.
Are you part of the family?
