Hi,
I am trying to find the baptism for the children of Daniel Magrath and Mary Wright. I contacted
All Saints at Leamington and was told that they could not help as the Church did not keep their records and they were now at the Warwick County Records Office .
Living in Australia I can not get into the office so was hoping that someone could please do a look up for me.
The children are
George Wright Magrath baptised circa 24 January 1830.
Mary Scamadine Magrath baptised 12 July 1832 (Mary is believed to have died in infancy)
Any information on the family would be greatly appreciated

Yes Daniel was transported for Life for forgery. He defaulted on a 100 pound note. He was tried in Warwick Assize in 1835. Spent 2 years locked up before being shipped out to Tasmania in 1837. His family was allowed to join him 2 years later.
Any information on his trial etc would be greatly appreciated. On his convict record it said he was of Limerick. Do you know if there were other Magraths there in the area at time of his children's baptism etc?

you would need to try the national archives for minutes of the assize records from the Midland circuit, the midland circuit records which included other county courts were destroyed in the 1850's and so only the copies of the minutes survive at the national archives.
it may have been an interesting case as it was forgery and there may be an article in either or both the local newspapers the courier or the advertiser. The Leamington Courier is online through the british library

I'm searching for the origins of Daniel Magrath and/or Mary Wright. I'm a Magrath myself. Found plenty on Daniel's convict past, but nothing on his or Mary's origins. You're about 10 years ahead of me. Did you have any luck?

Baptism for Mary wright at Wath upon Dearne
Mary Wright born 14.6.1799 bapt 5th july daughter of John Wright son of John and Mary of Wath and Mary Best daughter of Michael and Mary Best of Rotherham.
Which fits with a John Wright being one of he witnesses at the wedding.

And yes that fits with John Wright being a witness at the marriage. The marriage certificate says she would have been born in 1808, but then her death notice in Tasmania suggests she would have been born in 1793, so its hard to know what's right and wrong. Any other links that make you think that this is the Mary Wright that worked for Colonel O'Halloran in Old Milverton and married Daniel Magrath in 1829?
Its such a challenge trying to pull all the pieces together from >200 years ago.

No I had no idea of Colonel O'Halloran in Old Milverton.
So I just looked for a Wright family in Wath upon dearne.
But looking at it more closely there does seem to be more than one John and Mary so your right to be cautious.

Elizabeth Wright 29 Dec 1795 d of John and Mary of Kilnhirst
Elizabeth 25 Oct 1797 bapt 13.11 1797 d of John of Kilnhurst s of John and Edey of Swinton and Mary Samdin d of Thomas and Ann Scamadin of Rotherham
Mary 14 june /5 July 1799 d of John s of John and Mary of Wath and Mary Best d of Michael and Mary of Rotherham
Elizabeth Wright 15 Feb 1801 bapt 13 March d of John s of John and Mary of Wrath and Mary Nightingale of Rotherham
There does seem to be a brother Thomas Seamadine Wright s of John and Mary of Kilnhirst butcher born 19.4.1801 bapt 26 April .Mary is given as Mary Seamandine.
So there are a least 2 couples .Sorry it looks like I gave you the wrong one because surely Mary Scamadine must be her mother.But no sign of Mary at Wath upon Dearne.
John and Mary Scamadine married at Rotherham by licence 15 April 1788 She signs Scamadine .Wit Thomas Wildsmith and Elizabeth Wright.
At Rothertham there are John bapt 18.3.1789 of Rotherham but no mother's name but no sign of a daughter Mary .
John Wright married Mary Nightingale there 28.6.1798 by licence .Both widdowed and he was of Wath. wit Sarah Best and John Turnip?
So it looks like it is the same man with 2 wives -Mary Scamadine and Mary Best latter Nightingale .
(She married John Nightingale by licence 17.1.1782 at Rotherham age 23 and he was 24 of Sheffield.)
But there can't be right because of Thomas's baptism in 1801.
ps the second Mary widow of John of Kilnhurst was buried at Wath 30.4.1829 age 71 years.
There is a John Wright publican of Kilnhurst buried 26.4.1826 age 61 but also John Wright 18.4.1821 age 68 of Wath for which there is a Will Pc York which is worrying.
Other Mary Wright of Wth buried age 78 28.4.1836.

So yes the Kilnhirst one .Mother Mary Scamdine.
So father is John Wright born 1765 butcher then publican of Kilnhurst.
Scamdines should be easier and I can see a Will for Thomas.

My Mary Wright married Daniel Magrath in Wath Upon Dearne in 1 Mar 1829 both aged 21 (it says) - witnessed by John Wright. They had a baby Mary Scamadine Magrath baptised 12 Jul 1832 in Leamington, Warwick, England.
You seem to have more info about Mary’s parents – in that their names are definitely John Wright and Mary. Can I ask where you've picked that up from?
I'm imagining the Scamadine link comes from Marys daughters middle name, but again - is their more that you have seen?
For me Mary Wright was meant to be 21 in 1829 at her marriage, and a 1792 birth/baptism would have made her 37 at her marriage - which seems a big gap? The 1799 birth/baptism is closer, but still a stretch (30 vs 21).
Its tricky doing this forensic work over a chat, but great to share info. Thanks

I've done a bit more digging over in Australia.
So there is a death notice for Mary in the Lauceston Examiner on the Trove Website.
6 Aug 1872
MAGRATH.—On the 2nd August, at Hobart Town, Mary, relict
of the late Daniel Magrath, in the 80th year of her age.
Her death registration gives her as 79 at Hobart reg 1042.
This would put her birth in the 1792/3 area.
The marriage licence is just concerned with whether she is over 21 and doesn't need her parents consent to marry.It often says something like 21 years and upwards.
Daniel's death is 12.3.1847 age 52 years at Hobart on the Australian death index.So born c 1795.Reg 1397.
His death is reported in the Colonial Times 16th March.
LAMENTABLE AND FATAL ACCIDENT-We have to record to-day one of those fatal occurrences
which, in our limited community, neverfail to create a considerable degree of public
interest, sorrow, and sympathy. We allude to the death of Mr. Daniel McGrath, Inspector of
Weights and Measures of this city, who was found drowned in one of the excavations at the
back of Government-house early on Saturday morning. From the inquest, which commenced
on Saturday afternoon and concluded yesterday evening, we gather the following' particulars:-.
The deceased, it appeared, had been at (the launch, where he was as friendly and as cheerful
as usual; from thence he repaired, with ninety others, to Mr. Sykes's, the George the Fourth, on
the New Wharf, where a supper was given by the ship builders to their friends and other visitors.
Mr M'Grath remained here till some time after ten o'clock, when he left, it was supposed,
to go home, and considerably inebriated He never reached his home, but, from some cases '
countable reason, he had wandered in a direction quite opposite to his residence, and was found
as already stated, the next morning quite dead in the water into which, it is presumed he must
have accidentally fallen The person who first found him was attracted to the spot by the deceased's
hat, which was lying in the path From a slight contusion on the check, some suspicion
was at first excited that the deceased had been ill used, but aposi-mnrttm examination, with other
evidence, totally disproved this. His snuff-box, watch, and some money, were found upon his
person. The jury, after a very careful examination returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased
came accidentally to his death by drowining.
In theory both death certifcates should have parents and arrival dates in Australia.
But I do think Mary Wrights parents are John Wright 1765-1821 and his wife Mary Samadine 1759-1821.
(John Wright's father John Wright 1729 - 3.3.1814 of Swinton burial at Wath upon Dearne and mother Edith 1730-20.6.1790 buried 22nd wife of John of Kilnhurst.They married 7.12.1755 at Rawmarsh and he was a carpenter.And she was Edith Wilson John junior bapt at Wath 14.3.1765).
There is also that Will of Thomas Scamadine July 1770 Rotherham PC York court Mary Wright's grandfather which may suggest money in the family which may have been used by her to pay for the draper's shop for Daniel.Often if a man left money to his daughter he would then want it to go to her children .
