Thank you for taking the time to read this.
We have a lot of missing years for the above Ancestor, whom we know married Letitia Murray(nee Dunn) 12.12.1924. Kilburnie Ayrshire. He was a bachelor aged 55. Occupation Mineral Borer. Mother Jane Sheils -Farmer (Deceased) No father listed. He was born in Newtownlimavady N.Ireland and we think we may have the right birth cert. listing him born 9.10.1868. Dromore Tamlaght. Father Robert Fleming a flint scutcher from Balteagh (a total surprise) Mother Jane Sheils from Dromore. Don't think there was a marriage and Jane Sheils died in Limavady Workhouse. We would love to trace any of this Sheils family. Or know something of this surprise Fleming connection
The family story is that William aged about 14 (abt 1882) was given £5 by a farmer and told to go and make his way in the world, but after that nothing is known of him until 1924. No idea when he arrived in Scotland. And he changed the spelling of his name when he arrived here. Nothing on census returns or Ancestry's shipping lists. By his marriage he had purchased 2 properties. One in Rankinston named Scenery Hill (unable to trace it) and one in Hamilton St. Saltcoats, and by 1930 he was in partnership and had started the Clyde Coast Bus Co. So during the 'lost years' he had made a fair amount of money. Would there be a paper trail attached to the profession of Mineral Boring? He could have been a soldier possibly Boer War and had taken a skill with explosives into private life. But where do we start? There is a William Sheils on the 1891c in barracks in Hampshire. But can't follow it up. We badly need some 'out of box' thinking. Many Thanks.

Hello Sheena ,
How lovely you hear from you.....Good News and bad news I'm afraid. The Maureen Shields you speak of is my sister-in-law and we were visiting her just two weeks ago, and are in constant touch.
We have almost a full history on the Dunns/Nutts/Thorburns and each of their families with their Irish Roots.
We have long known that Wilam John was illegitimate and born near Limivady N. Ireland. Information given by him to his son and daughter, Bill (sadly died) and Letitia (still living) His mother was Jane Sheils (spelt this way) He names his mother on his marriage cert to Letitia in 1924. As you know they had 2 children. William first in 1928. Then Letitia.
Letitia has the papers of her Grandmother's entry in to Limivady workouse where she died in 1850.
We think we have the right birth cert. for William's John which gives his DOB as 1868 Mother Jane Shelis signed x Father Robert Fleming - Lint Scutcher (Flax/Linen) No Marriage.
WJS is a totally intriguing man of mystery. Diappears from Ireland and turns up in Saltcoats with enough money to buy 2 properies and set up a bus company. He was 55 in 1924. Declared occupation - Mineral Borer.
Could you e-mail me at * We have a couple of bits amd pieces that we've discoverd....and I would love to discuss our theories....and you never know you might just have that elusive piece of the jigsaw.
I think when we do find the answer.....it will be totally fascinating.
Warm Regards
Val(*)

HI, both, I know you posted this many years ago but I'm about to head to Scotland and Ireland and wondered if you had further information. Not so much about William but the Dunns going backwards. My Granny was Susan Dunn, sister of Letitia. We are aware of their father Samuel b.1854, his father Michael b.1811, his father James b.1774 and his father Samuel b 1740 plus some wives and siblings but would be interested to know what you might have too.
I have a small memory of visiting a great aunt in Ayr and that she was connected with owning a bus company.
I also have a photo taken at my parents wedding with Susan Dunn and what I think are two of her sisters if that might be interesting to either of you.

Thanks, I have a lot of this (although I didn't know the KIA details for Susan and letitia's 1st husbands). I can add that Joseph and Susan had 4 children together - Samuel as you said, was my father, then George 1921 - 1963, Joseph 1925 to 1987 (earlier Joseph from marriage with Elizabeth Boyd died in a pit accident in 1923), and James 1928 - 1985). I am in touch with my cousins and their children and hope to see lots of the next week when I visit Scotland with daughter Helen.
Really I am looking for information on the Dunn family going back beyond Samuel/Micheal/James/Samuel (1740).

I stumbled across this and think you have made an error.
I have the marriage cert of William Shields and Letitia Murray (previously Dunn) - it states he was born illegitimate to a Jane Shields (deceased at the time of their marriage) he is also 55 years old - so he cannot be William John Shields from the family you stated above. He was living at 66 Hamilton Street at the time of the marriage.

See that there was another topic that I'd moved from DOWN to DERRY board years ago-

As well as two others on DERRY board-

The following is a possibility to keep in mind-
1868 Jane Shiels gives birth to illegitimate son William in Dromore (children's father Robert Fleming of Balteagh)
1873 Jane Shiels, spinster, married a widower, Samuel Humes of Dromore but for some reason that marriage breaks down
1888 Jane (listed as a spinster with surname Shiels) dies in Limavady Workhouse
1892 Sam Humes (widower) dies

Hello Sheena,
When William John Shields married Letitia Dunn in 1924. No Father listed on Mge. Rec. because he was the illegitimate son of Jane Sheils who died Limavady Workhouse 1888. WJS added the ‘D’ to his name himself to change the spelling.
WJS arrived in Rankinston Ayrshire looking for his Cousin Alexander McLean married to his Mother’s sister Rebecca Sheils. He bought Scenery Cottage in Rankinston for his cousin and his family. . . . all before he met and married Letitia. We have photos of both cousins and they could almost be twins.
Alexander & Rebecca named their 8th. child William Shields McLean in his honour.
William and Letitia had 2 children William 1925 - 1999. Letitia 1927 - 2021 .
I am related to the Maureen you speak of and glad to say she is well and happy.
I will pass your message on to her.
We are fairly certain that we have traced the father of WJS. But nothing in this life is ever 100%
WJS continues to be a man of mystery with almost 40 years of his life missing.
But arrived in Rankinston with sufficient funds to buy property.
I have been in Scenery Cottage and seen the deeds . . . .so,an interesting man.
Looking forward to Scotland’s 1921c later this year.
Warm Regards.

WJS added the ‘D’ to his name himself to change the spelling.
It's not uncommon to find people using variations of their name in Ireland.
Marriage of Alexander MacLean & Rebecca Shiels in 1853-

There's also an interesting birth for a Rebecca Shiels in 1864 at Dromore Where William Shiels was born in 1868)-

Even more interesting, perhaps, is the death of a widow named Rebecca Sheals in 1873 at Terrydrum (residence of the Rebecca who married in 1853)- informant was her daughter Jane-

Added- a Rebecca Shields, daughter of Samuel, born at Dromore-

Thanks for your info Val. I have disclaimed my first thoughts on parents of John and have corrected it on my Ancestry page. I review my facts often and if I have found errors I change to what I have the correct records and documents to back it up. My earlier bungling around in 2012 was still a work in progress. Not been doing much recently. Unless an enquiry pops up and sends me back down the rabbit hole :-). Hope you are well?

You can find out all about the owners of the A1 Bus Company if you buy the History Booklet of it. My copy is buried in my garage somewhere but I think there is one in Bridgeton Bus Museum, Glasgow.
Old history books of Ayrshire are available from Stark's Newsagents in Hamilton Street, Saltcoats and I'm sure they can get a copy of the A1 Bus Company Book.
It was a unique style of company co-operation with Owner Members of the Organisation being restricted to 2 buses except in rare circumstances.
They operated along the route from Ardrossan to Kilmarnock and possibly also extended to Darvel.
Every town / village on the route had a bus garage attached to an owners house. They operated by every owner setting a bus at ( I guess ) 5:30am towards Kilmarnock and the other to Ardrossan thus sharing the benefit of having no Central depot and the overhead of buses 'running light' to a start point many miles away.
From memory, Duff of Parkhouse Garage oppo Ardrossan Academy and next to it the A1 bus terminus.
Steele of Stevenston and I believe that garage still operates on Glencairn Street, stevenston ( near the Mayfield House) although Steeles had another bus and coach works just off New St, near the Rail Station.
There is one in Stevenston Road, Kilwinning just before Howie's Garage. Another in Springside and probably Crosshouse too but I cannot recall the others at the moment.
When Stagecoach eventually took them over some of the owner drivers continued with the new set-up.
I have a photo somewhere in my archives of an A1 Routemaster at the turning circle on Chapelhill Mount, the current Ardrossan Terminus. When I find it I'll post it.
I can't recall a Greyfriars pub in Stevenston but there was a Greystones Hotel at the corner of New Street and Moorpark Road West which eventually suffered a massive fire, I think now demolished.
When you were at Ardrossan Academy you were probably contemporary with Linda Duff of Parkhouse Garage ( in which Andy still has a Routemaster ).
If I rediscover my A1 history book I'll post it too because it names all co-operators and their bases.
cheers, Ian

Hi . I have both A1 books. My family-Stewarts were one of the first owners. My Grandfather, Brothers William ,James and Jonathan and some cousins were the initial owners. as time went on those who married in -IE Dunn, William Sheild, Baillie and some other were able to get shares and have their own buses throughout the 'threetowns' -[ Saltcoats ,Stevenston and Ardrossan.] My Father Jack Stewart. was one of the final holdouts when Stagecoach bought the company. His garage was in Factory Lane Saltcoats, he and Brother George had 2 garages there. One across from McGregor owner of Clyde Coast. Growing up I had first hand info. In fact our doorbell was a 'push once' from one of the buses:-)
