Hello Kerry Ward (Bourne)
I think we must be related! My father was Jack Douglas Bourne, son of George Godfrey Bourne, youngest son of Charles Bourne and Mary Ann Godfrey. Are you descended from Willis Bourne? (Only think this because of the Hassell surname.)
My father would never talk about his family background and we never met any of his relations. This made me really curious, but thanks to the internet, I've been able to find out quite a bit which I'm happy to share though you probably know it already.
Would love to know more about the Bournes and other related families, especially as I've never had any contact with any relatives!
Rhonnie (not Amber - just an internet name) (and my maiden name is Bourne of course!)
-
Yes willis was my great grandad he married florence mable hassell in 1906 they lived on chapel street in castle gresley. They had 5 children harold my grandad, dorothy, lilian, joyce and charles. My dad grandma and uncles still live on bridge street castle gresley. What can you tell me about george? Its great to be intouch!!
-
It appears that all the bourne men were coal miners. :)
-
This is what I know about George: he married Maria Draper in 1916 and had one son (my dad, Jack Bourne). I'm not sure how long George and Maria stayed together though. The only thing my dad did admit to was spending a lot of time with his grandfather (Charles) when he was young - he seemed very fond of him. George seems to have left Derbyshire altogether and later on had another family (though still married to Maria). He had two daughters in the late 1940s and lived in the West Country! I never found out if my dad knew about all this. He had his own secrets and I think that's why he cut himself off from his Derbyshire family. A shame really as we (me and my brothers) never knew Maria, our grandmother. She died in 1960 in Newhall. George died in 1957 in Bath. All very strange!
Do you know anything about Leonard Bourne, b 1882? He's listed on the censuses as the son of Charles and Mary Ann but there's no record of his birth and he was born 2 years before they got married. On his marriage certificate (1909), he leaves the father's name section blank too. Just a bit puzzling.
Anyway, do ask anything else you think I might know. Do you still live in Derbyshire? I'm glad to finally find someone from the Bourne family!
-
In the 1901 census leonard was 19 and a coal miner my grandma edith married to harold bourne son of willis remembers that grandad charles and grandad george were pit managers.
I live near birmingham with my husband but visit regularly in castle gresley
Im not sure but are we second cousins?
-
Who did your dad marry? And who are you siblings? And year you were all born
Thanks rhonnie x

Hi Kerry
Not sure what we are - always confused by first and second cousins, removed etc. I think that my dad was first cousin to your granddad so maybe we're first cousins once or twice removed...
I'm happy to give you more information but would prefer to do it direct - not sure if there's a way of doing it here? Otherwise, if you send me an email on (*), I'll reply. Could attach the family tree insofar as I know it!

Its possible that charles was adopted by the plant family because his birth parents might have given him up alot of that went on in those days.
Also could you find the children of james bourne and mary
baker? James was born in 1805. Thanks
-
yes it is possible he was addopted but it is also possible that
Ann Plant has remarried and is his mother or
Ann Plant could be his Aunt
Could also be a transcriber error and he is just a worker not a son etc etc etc
need to find other records to try and confirm who Ann Plant and William Jones Grandfather ??
are they related to Charles Hassall
is it the right Charles Hassall in the 1861
I have a look for james bourne and mary baker but
where did you get this info from ??
when and were where they married ???
I have found a James Bourne married to a elizabeth
living in Ashby de la Zouch, Hartshorn, Repton and Gresley, Derbyshire area ??
how is he related to the other Bourne family already found ??
-
My cousin found him he was born in 1805 in what i presume hartshorne derbyshire he married mary baker in 1864 ???
They are the parents of george bourne and had 10 other children.
-
They lived in derbyshire but moved to nottingham united kingdom
-
I think he may have been married to a Elizabeth first and the remarried mary baker as he would have been 60 when he married mary baker and also would he have been having children then :-\

charles Hassall/ Astle
the mystery has just began and
has left a lot of questions
who is his parents
was Ann his mother or grandmother etc
was she still having children at 52- 53
was Sarah his mother
why did he change his name etc etc
you might have to look at buying charles Hassall/ Astle birth certificate
-
starting with Anne Astlel marriage
John Astle married Anne Joynes
on 24 Oct 1819 at Ticknall,Derby,England
on the 1851 she is a widow
possible death for
John Astle

looks promising but there are others in surrounding area's ???
if it is correct you would think Anne wouldn't be Charles and Mary mother ???
I wonder if they are her grandchildren ???
-
Its a total mystery I'll ask my cousin
If she can help thanks though. :)
-
this looks like Anne and Sarah on the 1841
no John I wonder if he is already dead need to look for another death for him or he is just away form home at the time of the 1841 ??? unfortunately the 1841 doesn't have much detail ie: doesn't say if she is a widow

-
Is that bourne or burn? ???
-
burn
it is the only one so far that I can find
could be a transcriber error or it is not uncommon for surname to be changed slightly
I haven't had a chance to look further into it
-
not having much luck finding him
I have checked for a marriage for John Burn to Anne
John Burn married Ann Wilson
23 Apr 1804 at Church-Gresley, Derbyshire, England
so it looks like surname Burn is correct
but is it the right person ???
did he change it to Bourne ???
Also I stumble upon a couple of tree's that have come to the same conclusion
that this is him and his parents are the above John burn and Anne Wilson ????
unfortunately they haven't posted any proof to back it up :-\
might be worth while starting another post with ref to this one
maybe someone else can find him for you :(
as I don't seem to be having any luck this time
-
oh you have already started a new thread
it would be really good if you put ref to other thread you have on the same person

-
Oh my days he went to prison no way :o
-
maybe
they are a few James bourne in the area could be any of them
but he isn't turning up any where so far in the 1871 and 1881 census
there are a couple of marriage in the area around 1861 to 1871 as I was wondering if he had remarried
but it is going to take some working out also did he change his place of birth also is he still working as a potter
the death in Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire is promising, there is a few ways to prove it is him you could find where he is buried and if there is a grave stone would there be any info that would connect him to Elizabeth and the children burial records from the church might have a clue or the easiest but will cost is to buy the death record but you would want to be sure it is him before spending money
-
Derek mentions he has access to parish records maybe he can find out if it is him ???
-

I'm amazed that I have come across this, I am Robert Hassell, great-great Grandson of Charles Hassell, Harry Hassell (the youngest of his children) was my great grandfather.
I was doing my family tree a few years back and hit a few brick walls along the way.
There is a lot of mystery over Charles Hassell (or should I say Hassall) and there is a little story that has been passed down the family and why he changed the spelling of his name in later life.
Does this mean I am related? ...I hope this thread is still active
