Title: George Ennis - born St Helier 1789/90
Post by: bettyve on Monday 07 May 12 13:27 BST (UK)
George Ennis (61) and Ann Stratton (31) had children (Ann 9, Lingham 8, Elizabeth 6, George 5 mths) in the 1851 Channel Islands Census.  It must have been his second marriage as his previous children were Peter born 1828, Charles Philippe born 1824, Josue born 1825, Jean born 1826.   His wife was Nancy Sarre or Nancy Jane.  But I can find no early records of that marriage or births.  I did see Nancy Sarre married to an Abraham Ennis around the 1820's and that was in the 1941 Channel Islands Census.  Can someone please help.  Thanks also to Jerseylily for what I have so far.

Do you know when George married Ann Stratton? -he seems to be with her in 1841 (Ann age 20 - but ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years and relationships not given) - there is also a possible son for George  - Abraham???
Maybe George's 1st wife died pre 1841 census?

Just a sideline here.
I have been doing the Family Tree for my Neighbour here in Sydney.
As I was looking for Strattons on FreeREG I just noticed a Ref that I had found before for her Deslandes Line. A Godparent at Philip Deslandes/Kezia Strattons Sons Baptism 1843, was a CATHERINE Stratton!
It would be a small World if Kezia/Ann/Catherine Stratton were Sisters ;D

Hi Suzard,
Thanks Suz for finding the connection.
I hadnt yet followed Philip/Kezia through the Census as I had only been working on their Daug Kezia Martha (1837) who emigrated to Australia 1855 with her Brother Charles and his Wife Olivia.

As far as I can see from the parish records this is the way the Ennis family developed in Jersey

The first Ennis here was James (sometimes Jacques in the records), there is a record of James Ennis of Plymouth marrying Susanne Vautier of Grouville, Jersey, 26/11/1780. I think Susanne died, although I've not found a burial record yet,  the next marriage is of James Ennis (Innes) from England to Elizabeth L'Her, this was 5/2/1786. I really need to find Susanne's death record to confirm that there is only one James.

James and Elizabeth had the following children,

Eliza Ann 1786

James 1787 - married Elizabeth Le Ray, children James 1813, Ann 1815, Jane 1818, James 1819, Elizabeth 1821-1824, George 1826 and Elizabeth 1829

George 1789 - married 1) Ann (Nancy) Sarre, daughter of Josué Sarre and Elizabeth Jeune, died 1839. They had children George 1813, James 1815, Nancy 1816, Elkizabeth 1821, Abraham 1822, Charles 1824, Josué 1825, Jean 1826 and Pierre 1828.
Married 2) Ann Stratton - baptism 21/10/1818 daughter of Samuel William Stratton and Mary his wife - their children you already have from the census returns

Ann Sara 1793

Abraham 1795 - married Ann (Nancy) Lomas, children Ann 1819, Eliza 1820, Abraham 1824-1824, Abraham 1825, George 1827.

Obviously there are a lot of gaps that still need to be filled, notably the dates of George's 2 marriages. You can see from the repeated use of Christian names that the Ennises will take a bit of untangling.

I'll try and find some more next time I'm at the Archive.

Hi Suzard
Peter was born 1828 by the first wife, Ann (Nancy) Sarre, and I now have that she died 1839, and Ann Stratton showed up in the 1841 Census, so George and Ann must have married between 1839 and 1841.  Yes, Abraham was George's son to Ann (Nancy) Sarre and he was born 1822.
Yes, I had seen that Kezia, Ann and Catherine Stratton were sisters and the father at times lived with each of them.  In the 1861 Census, George Ennis and Ann (Stratton) have Catherine (Stratton) Higgs and James Higgs living with them.  Next door is Philip Deslande and Kezia (Stratton) and the father, Samuel Stratton.  Samuel was in the Army/Navy. Thank you for your input and with the great help of the volunteers I am gradually piecing my history together.

Hi Trish
Thank you for your interest in the Ennis family.  There are so many Ann's in this family, I think I will have to sit quietly and let it all sink in and then try to sort them out.
With the Stratton sisters, check out the 1861 Census and you will see them living next door to each other - Ennis family and Deslande family with Samuel there also.
Thanks again and good luck with your searching.

Hi Jerseylily

What would I do without you and your research for me.  You have been so very helpful to me in my searching.

I had found James and Elizabeth Le Ray and followed up with their son George 1826 as my ancestor.  He had an interesting career.  Was a Naval Instructor on the 91 gun battleship Victor Emmanuel and his daughter Mary married a Surgeon, Joseph Anderson, trained in Scotland and went to live in Preston, Lancashire.  Mary studied music and their son went to Boarding School at the age of 12.  That son then was honoured in the Navy in the 1900's.  George lived with them in his retirement.  This George was married to Mary De St Croix.  But then I found out I was looking for a Peter and and instead of the father being James 1787, it now went to his brother George 1789.  It all became a little confusing.   But with your  help I do not feel like it is a hopeless case.  In fact I am very enthusiastic about this new "hobby".
Have a great day.
